Does anybody have experience with chard that they can share? When is the best time to plant in zone 8/9? I have seen locally grown chard on sale at the farmer's market in the spring? Can it be grown in the fall?
chard
We grow it in the fall in zone 5. Also, what we planted last fall lasted well into the next summer.
I have three "Bright Lites" chard plants that somehow have managed to grow all through the past terrible hot summer with total neglect! I keep telling myself we should eat some of the leaves, but it looks so pretty! LOL
As far as I know chard is winter hardy in your zone, milesdt
Swiss chard and beets are members of the same family, and are planted around the same time. For zone 8/9, the best times to plant beets and chard are between now and March. Now that the weather is starting to cool down a bit, I will probably plant mine within the next several weeks. Although I sometimes direct seed Swiss chard, I usually start seeds in cell pack containers, and then transplant into the garden later. Sow the seeds no more than about ½ inch deep, and germination will take about a week or so in 60 degree soil. Each chard “seed” is actually a multiple seed and will sprout several plants. Although Swiss chard is relatively cold hardy, it is not as cold hardy as some other greens, such as collards, cabbages, and kale, and will get burned if the temperature gets really low. If the plants do get burned by extremely low temperatures, they will come back out when the weather warms up a bit. See the website below for a little more information on Swiss chard.
