The woodpeckers all stay here year round

Stafford County, VA

Thanks for the comments on the juvenile mockingbirds. Here is another shot with both of them in it.

Here's a pic with just one of them. This one hangs around the deck most of the time, waiting for me to put out meal worms. To answer an earlier question, they are starting to feed themselves but when Mama comes near, they instinctively beg.

Lovely pics. Dave of the juvies. On the Blue Bird, is that a Cat's tail he landed on? Such deep rich color! Wow!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Everyone has been sharing some simply gorgeous photos! **applause**

Stafford County, VA

Yes Lily, it is a cat tail. Here is another where you can see the stem.

How good it is to see you here, WC2. Great shots of your woodpecker.

Welcome also, Countrymom.

A tiny little Striated Pardalote at the osprey nest site yesterday afternoon. This is a male with his enhanced spring colouration.

Pardalote is very pretty.

Marlton, NJ

Love that Pardalote!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Stunning shots Margaret. That pardalote is so beautiful. Great capture. I can't believe how perfectly you captured that duck in flight. It looks like it's suspended in air. Fabulous.

Dave, gorgeous shots!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Gorgeous shots Margaret, Dave and everyone else. Sorry I got behind again.

This Western Tanager sat in the trees watching my last three orioles eating at the hummer feeders for a couple days. The third day it decided to be brave and come on our deck to check out the feeders and it's now a regular visitor, even if we're sitting closeby having lunch out on the deck.

This Black-headed Grosbeak seems to enjoy something on what's left of the hollyhock plants.

A Baltimore Oriole somehow fought through the hummingbirds to have a sip of nectar.

Here's a fledgling Mississippi kite photo from August. He hung out on the backporch for a while. He was trying to look big and scary in this photo, but he looks like he's looking to the heavens.

How awesome...I would have just been about to pop!!

I have a group of 3-4 Blue Jays that are hanging around a lot right now....very loud and noisy! So I always know they are on the way in!!

Not really to pretty right now!

thebestmissy, that's one neat pix of the kite! Nan, it's nice to have Blue Jays. Thus far mine are very shy still. For quite some time now I tried to attract them to the back yard. Only recently I've one that came after the whole peanuts that I occassionally get from the grocery stores.

Here is another peanuts lover, this one hasn't been around much, so each time I see him. It's really a nice treat. My Redheaded wp.

Thebestmissy, I would be in birding heaven if I saw that little kite! That is so amazing!
Duc, beautiful pics, artfully composed!
Nanny, fun bluejay shots. Mine are looking like Ichabod Crane. They seem to hardly have any neck feathers!
Lily, we about posted at the same time. Hope I waited long enough. Nice redheaded wp!

I've gone through all my South Dakota trip photos and I think my favorite bird pics are from the Badlands. I'll share a few. Here is a Mountain Bluebird.

Juvi Mountain Bluebird

I saw this female Baltimore Oriole and the male in a plum tree by the Visitors' Center. When I put the count of "2" in ebird, it asked for a confirmation on this "high" number! Guess you don't usually see them in the badlands.

I'll stop with this one, a Rock Wren on the side of one of the mounds.

Missey, loved that kite photo. Glad your oriole was able to get some nectar.

Nanny, my juvie jays aren't very pretty now either, but I do love the noise from them. Cute pictures.

Lily, I just love that red-headed. You're so fortunate to see them in person.

We took another trip to the coast (Ft. Bragg in northern California) and the fog was so bad that all I really found to photograph were gulls. At least they were people friendly. Thanks to Resin for identifying them. Here's a Calif. Gull looking bored.

Elphaba, we posted at the same time-love all those pretty birds, especially the Mountain BB.

Here's a Western Gull. Now I see how they are able to swallow such large fish at one time.

The blue jays are working over the nuts on the beech tree which is very full this year. They try the ones on the ends of the branches & are having a difficult time staying perched on them.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

From this weekend...

This little lady is the grande dame of our balcony! She rules that perch! She has run off all the male hummers now, and only allows one other female to feed (I am presuming it's her daughter). When she wants to sit on the tree limb I have provided as a perch to all the birds that visit us, then she gets it! She has run off the goldfinches, chickadees, titmouses, and nuthatches! The only birds she gives way too are the woodpeckers! The hummers will all be gone from our area soon... I'll miss my little lady!

Great photos everyone ! Here is a newcomer to my yard - a European starling fledgling (identified for me by my friends at Wild Birds Unlimited)

Nice pics everyone. Duc, those gull pics are gorgeous.

Here's a Carolina Wren. Look at those big feet.

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I like this wren pose better but there's way too much ugly stuff in the pic and not enough clarity to super crop. I like his tail though.

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

WildRose, your little hummer is a cutie.

Countrymom, I happen to love starlings but we don't see more than a handful of them in our neighborhood so they're not pests at our feeders.

Elphaba, love your little wren. Your little one is more colorful than our bewick's wrens.

This wrentit was enjoying a bath and flew up on top of the fence to shake off the water.

This oak titmouse sits on this log and watches me through the window until I give in and put some peanuts out for it. I think it has taught it's sisters, brothers and cousins to do the same thing!

Our one Western Tanager has become quite the bully at the feeders. When this juvie oriole appeared opposite the tanager, the battle was on.

Nice pics. everyone. Duc, I'm at a loss! Which is the Western Tanager and what was the Juvenile Oriole? The Oak titmouse is cute, and smart too. lol

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Tanager on the right - note the thicker bill
