had two eclose today--including this male who's on his way to mexico as we speak
Daily butterfly pictures #91
Bruce, I had two more Monarchs visited my garden within the week. I wanted you to know I DID search for the tag. But I wasn't so lucky. Nice Red Admiral J.
Have seen some different butterflies around but they wouldn't lite long enough for me to snap a pic. Had some kind of moth on my tuberoses not 12" from me. By the time I got my camera out of my pocket, it was gone and it never came back. I tried to follow it but lost it. It was gray and pink on the back with a stubby body. Anyone have any idea's?
This beauty was enjoying my zinnia's today.
Crit, I believe monarch because viceroys have a semicircular line that starts at the bottom of their lower wing, and cuts in--I don't see that on this butterfly
Crit, the moth could possibly be White-lined sphinx moth. I maybe wrong, but it looks very much likes one.
Right you are, Lily -- definitely a White-lined Sphinx Moth. This species is quite often seen flying during the day.

Wow the Painted Lady and Red Admiral are very pretty...never see those here.
Lily that is great you have a GF cat...I still keep hoping to see some here, but so far nothing.
Crit it does look busy in your garden.
Jmorth your monarch is so striking. I've not seen any the past weeks here, and never did get the cats I usually get, but my milkweed not looking so good this year.
The Spicebush Swallowtails have been abundant in my garden and I tried to get a good shot of these two, but the Mr. just didn't stay still long enough to capture very well.
Thanks for the ID on the moth. I thought it was a moth of some sort when I saw it the other night, with it's stubby little body. But then when I saw them during the day I was confused! lol The first b'fly pic doesn't look quite right to be a Tiger ST. Is it, or is it something different? Had lots of skippers all around too, but didn't take pics of all of them.
Nice pictures all. I'm learning to differentiate all the type of Swallowtail here. Thanks for your help.
The Black Swallowtail cat, made it to Chrysalis form last week. I had read that, it will turn green or grey depending on what it attached itself too. In this case, I've put in a wood skewer to see, what color it would take on.
I saw a Gulf Fritillary yesterday on my Lady Margaret's, I did get a picture of it, then it went to my hammock and took a nap on it. Got a picture of that too. I'll load them up later...no time now...just wanted to share. Hope to see more.
Amazing creatures aren't they nanny!
Poor thing looks like it has been through a storm! Nan. Bruce, it's amazing, I agreed. Burn, I like to see the BST pupa takes on a green color. I've 4 currently that took on the straw color. Oh, wanna see something cute as can be? Look. Look closely you will find my Spicebush cat. among the leaves above the G.Frit. cat. Both cats. are just about to pupate soon.
In the garden, I've seen a few Gulf Frits, several Sulphurs, some Clear-winged Moths and skippers.
I would love to find a spicebush cat...they are so cool! I have on BST cat left out on the fennel outside. He should be going off soon to make his chrysalis and over winter here and wait for spring!
Such lovely bright combo of flower and butterfly J. I'm pretty sure this is my very first sighting of Giant Tigerswallowtail. I had no idea that we've them here. First time ever, please help confirm. Crit, I think yours is one too. It didn't stay very long, so that's the only pic. I've gotten. Thanks all.
Can anyone verify the butterfly in my Sept. 26th post @ 6:50 p.m. Post #8825664? Is it a tiger swallowtail? Doesn't seem to have enough yellow to be that one. Dale, where areyou???? ^_^
Crit, check this out. I am now convinced that I've a Giant Tigerswallowtail, and it's the lighter form of the two. Look: http://www.pbase.com/rcm1840/image/46581674 And yours must be the dark form of them 'purdies'. LOL
Thanks LL.........that sure looks like it! I thought it looked like it had more yellow when it was flying, but when it landed it didn't ever close it's wings. Just stayed like the pic above.
Crit and Lily: All of your images are Giant Swallowtails (Papilio cresphontes). No such animal as a Giant Tiger Swallowtail. There are Giant Swallowtails and there are Eastern Tiger Swallowtails. Nice shots on all three of them!

That's totally my error. Thank you Dale for the correction. Papilio cresphontes, Papilio cresphontes, I need to repeat that about a dozen times or until I remember it.
well, I just posted pic. of a giant swallowtail.
Thanks Dale, can always count on you!!!!!!!! You are much appreciated!
That's gorgeous J. I found myself some New England Asters, I hope they will do well in the garden for my next year butterflies crop. :)) I saw a dark Swallotail like butterfly yesterday. EFG, I went and looked for your Giant Swallowtail, it was still pending. I'll look again.
oooh, jealous of that checkered white.
