Wow that is a neat video, Allison

How come a distance in a car seems so much shorter than on foot???? I walked down to the cross road and over to where the road is closed to find out why....whew...should have done that earlier in the day, not much shade walking that way
Creek must have overflowed but no water there now, I guess they have to check the structural integrity of it now.....after I walked away a helicopter flew overhead and actually came down pretty low, I guess was checking the area.

I don't know why people are suprised at some of the flooding...notice where they built houses and roads etc....there should be a considerable distance between structure and water

Water is a powerful and destructive force

I can't give blood anymore...I get soooooo sick(nauseous and almost fainting) and now after having my duaghter they have trouble even finding the vein.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - the same flood-prone areas keep rebuilding in the same areas and the cycle continues. New Orleans is the ultimate example of stupidity.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I could never live in a flood prone area like that, I guess you have to grow up with it so that you get used to it.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wonderful

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Forget the price of pumping gas, they're charging $7500 for pumping water!

here is a brief sample of an article that better explains my views on why, while no doubt disruptive and devastating, these storms have much to teach us if we're willing to learn.

"Native American tradition honors the existence of Thunder Beings. These Thunder Beings are understood by Native Americans to be messengers from the powers on high, the Star People (extraterrestrial visitors). The Thunder Beings are a force for both dissolution and re-creation. In the Plains Indian tradition, a person who has a visit by a Thunder Being, in person, in vision or in dream, becomes a heyoka, a "contrary". [4] This heyoka then customarily soon starts behaving in a way opposite to the conventions of the dominant culture. The heyoka does so, precisely in order to wake up society to see that there are other and fresher ways of doing things. Thus, the heyokais the human counterpart of the Thunder Beings, who repeatedly dissolve the existing order and fashion a new arrangement from the pieces."

I have experienced the power of these beings, and i respect and revere them. New Orleans would benefit greatly by doing the same. It's not that i don't sympathize with the suffering of those affected by the storm, quite the opposite. I just feel a strong responsibility to rebuild responsibly, to learn and grow from these experiences and create a society more in tune with our earth and it's natural processes that precede us, and will inevitably carry on despite us.
Forgive my sounding preachy, i myself am not above being attached to this modern world and all it's ease and comfort. Just thinking outloud.

Punch me in the nose. I can give blood, they just won't take it.

Good points, outlaw. But today, we are so arrogant that we think we can control everything.

Mine is the high-octane, high demand 0 negative. Tiger blood!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Speak for yourself! I'm an incredibly wonderful person! Ask anyone!!
(* let me know who you're going to ask first so I can slip them a $20.. Ok, maybe $10 if I can get away with it.)

Thomaston, CT

Just got my tv, computer, & phone back this afternoon....my son has been without power since Sunday....he came & took my generator. My stepdaughter in Commack has no power, & thinks she will be out until Fri. CT was hit very hard, many homes along the shore totally gone......

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sorry to hear that Robin, glad your OK.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will take that $10.00.. LOL

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Commack was closer to the track, My aunt in Brooklyn says it was horrible. I have a cousin in Ct that says it was bad too, she called the day after, they both have power though..

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

LoL! Allison ☺!

South Hamilton, MA

News had pictures of stranded families being rescued in NJ. Tough times ahead still. We got off so easy, just some power loss.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Marilyn, I'm glad you're back. Now if we'd only hear from pirl...

We're fine here in Warren, but my late Mom's house in Southampton has no power - no damage, either, just no power- and the tenants are not happy. It's amazing how many degrees of deprivation there are... When you look at some of the pictures that have been posted here and on TV, it's hard to complain about inconvenience.

Oh well...

Pam

That's the strangest part. We've become so wrapped in our little world of convenience that we feel some sort of entitlement to it. Those renters chose to live there. I'm sure in their rental agreement, it was a simple oversight on your part when there was nothing included about your super human ability to provide safe haven from all acts of god, who calls upon you for the tough problems, to provide power that flows from your fingers directly to their iPads and k-cup machines. As "the super" you are super and superior, trees, limbs, & leaves don't fall within a foot of the perimeter without asking your permission first. Lol maybe they should rent from chuck Norris. :D

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I don't think anyone here thinks they are more superior then the elements.. gardeners are more in tune with the earth.. or did we forget we are chatting on a lets make our world better by growing plants and our own food site

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yeah!! I'm throwing away my keyboard and sending up smoke signals instead!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Update tonight on the news is that piping goes right to the sewage authority(1 of our customers)...ICK...

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Ugh.. horrible..

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

how terrible

We are still having some serious problems with flooding due to all the water we got from the hurricane, plus the very high tides we've been experiencing. Yesterday at tennis practice we heard that two of the small dams upriver from the big one that protects the whole city where DGD's high school is located were close to breaching, so several of the main highways were shut down where they crossed the river, and some trailer parks along the banks were evacuated. The dams held, though, so everything was back to normal today. But tonight we were coming back from Cape May from a northeasterly direction, with DGD and a friend, and several roads were closed due to flooding from the Egg Harbor River. One road was open but water was gushing across it as though there were a river there; you could drive through it slowly but it was a very interesting experience, listening to the loud rush of water and hoping your car was high enough to avoid immersing the engine or anything else vital. The girls actually looked up from their texting and iPods and marveled! Briefly.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh wow.. so sorry to hear it GG.. hope it gets better down there too

Albany, NY(Zone 5a)

Glad you and your family are safe robindog. Hope things settle for you all soon.
Sounds bad greenhousegal you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Ewww.... That poor man. I hope he's ok.

I think I'd have an easier time communicating with smoke signals. Is sarcasm totally lost in text? Too soon? Whatever.
