Hurricane Irene Pt2
Waiting to hear from my friend to hear if the river waters reached them tonight
Really hope they get through ok.
Hope everyone, accounted for or not, has a safe night, warm and dry! Sweet dreams everyone. Please keep the updates coming.
Lots of problems still. The commuter rail, Metro North, will be closed tomorrow.
Beautiful out now - 64 degrees.
We were lucky here in Saugus. Some rain, some wind, only one tree down across the street in the neighbor's back yard. Not even the whole tree. Took off a chunk of his deck, but spared the house. lots of sticks and leaf litter down but nothing a good lawn blower can't fix. The topsy Turvy planters seemed to do ok on the ground and my son and I will put them back up tomorrow. I heard rumors of some flooding in town, but haven't been out since early this morning so I couldn't say for sure.
Thanks to all who have been concerned about us. Hope you all did ok and are not now in the path of any flooding.
Martha
One person died in my county. He was electrocuted trying to save a five yr old boy near a downed power cable. And another person died in Westchester County right near the Amtrak station I used on my vacation. One of five whose inflatable boat capsized. This person drowned.
Terrible.
Oh no Allison! Day off today?
It's bright here compared to yesterday. Still w/out power so I won't be on to long. The generator is nice ^_^ but needs to be hooked up to a switch a few tweaks to run the entire house. Right now we have half the house on it. My 2 freezer's downstairs and my frig. up are all running and thats all I care about. TV is on and the PC too so i'd say i've got it pretty good compared to my neighbors. If this continunes Brian will take the generator over to DD's house for the day. She needs it more than I with a 3 year old, 2 year old and a 5 month old!
Feeling very blessed this morning.

LIRR running on schedule as are the subways so DW is off to Manhattan. As I suspected there was only a few fallen branches around the neighborhood, and no flooding whatsoever. I did however find an inordinate amount of tiny leaves on my car and some dirt on my windshield. This has cause me some distress and I will have to wash the car later this afternoon after I rest from watching the storm all day yesterday.
still don't know.. the hotline says it's down.. and website might just be for customers and says delay until noon
I tried calling the only number I had for Pirl.. says it was unavailable .. hope all is well there
Me too. :(
Getting off now, going to check out the damage in the back forty. I know we have at least one 30 foot maple down and I can see "bare" spots so im assuming a few more are down. On the bright side...DOWNED TREES = FIREWOOD = $ SAVINGS & EARNINGS. :)
.. when life gives you lemons you make lemonade.
be careful if you head out there Celeste
can see where my sub pump left a rut in the grass.. so glad we installed that!!
Wow Allison no work for you I guess.
Glad the generator is working...really anyone in an area that is prone to losing electric for any about of time should get one
Glad the sump pump is working
Friends in south Jersey are still without power
Looks like a tornado did hit in Lonch Branch
Geez a loo!!!!

WOW!!
I'm counting my blessings again and again.
I was told to go in at 11... I just said yeah.. to where??... I have some stops in town here.. but not going to get far today
Glad to hear all are doing okay.
So my friends in my old neighborhood are fine they river waters did not reach them
My anxiety level has been very high following all of you these last days. Continuing to pray for your safety.
Wow - crazy pics.
Heard the hospital in Denville is surrounded by water. The CEO was on the radio before. He was in NOLA for Katrina. So it must be his fault.
But some parts of the area didn't make out as well

all is fine by me but pretty much the whole central and south part of Vermont is messed up.
So sad to see a covered bridge go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyO18one8fU&feature=player_embedded
Due to hurricane Irene I've decided not to move to the Hamptons after achieving unprecedented wealth.
I saw that bridge. How awful.
Death toll is at least 35 now. People always think about the wind of a hurricane, yet it's always the rain that causes most of the hardship.
I believe the hurricane's ferocity is gauged by the wind velocity and low barometric pressure, that may be a 'clue' as to why people think of the winds first.
People who have been in the path of a cat 3 or more hurricane think of A) destruction, B) death, (usually 2nd because people usually don't like to think of their own mortality, it has a tendency to seem unpleasant..) - and C) how to avoid A & B.
Homestead was relatively dry one day after the hurricane, I saw it with my own eyes - at least the debris that was once called Homestead.
- That was all that was left, just a lot of debris.
Total damage here...not too bad. I've got a 60 foot weeping willow hanging into the tree that I _thought_ was going to go down, and another tree that came down in the way back. We're going to have to be very careful getting that willow down as it is close to the house. If we'd taken that tree down like we wanted to, it definitely would have taken out my bathroom. We've got a lot of kindling, everywhere.
A couple of sections of fence came down.
The bean trellis is now about 5 feet tall - two days ago it was 8 or 9 feet. Not sure what's going on under all those jungle beans, but I'm going to leave it be until they finish. Tomatoes are a jumble, but only the tippy tops broke off. Peppers were on the ground but they still look healthy and we just finished re-staking them. Eggplant is a big surprise, doing well. All the rest of the ground veggies are a little beat up but they will be fine.
The sunflowers are a broken memory. I can't bear to rip them all up yet. Maybe tomorrow. Most of the zinnias that were just starting to bloom hit the ground, and I lost a lupine.
My neighbor's giant 20millionyearold oak uprooted and covered his yard, I'm so glad it didn't hit his house. None of us heard a thing, it went down easy. He's giving us the firewood. 8-)
My town supplies its own power so we're good there, only lost for a couple of hours yesterday. DS in the next town over has been advised it will be 2-7 days before he takes a hot shower with the light on again. My basement is drying out from the minor flood we had in between power outage and generator start. My favorite sneakers are drying in the sun on the front porch.
DH found a tic on himself last night -- beware, those little buggers are still out there and more than happy to catch a meal and a lift at our expense.
Oh -- I used to have a french press, but I gave it to DH when we were a courtin', and he broke it. I have to remember to replace it. DH would enjoy the french maid too much, I'll just get a new press. 8-)
Ingrid
Saugus survived pretty well except there is no power this morning at town center and the library, which opened for a few hours, closed at noon just as I was coming in to log my volunteer hours for the week. Hope they are back up tomorrow.
