Pittosporum "silver sheen"

Albury, Australia

Hi,
I live in Australia and I am having trouble keeping my Pittosporum hedge alive. Does anyone having tips besides the obvious watering? Also is there a way of making cuttings from my surviving bushes instead of buying new plants every time they die? Would love to plant some soon as spring is just around the corner. Any advice would be much appreciated :)

First, have you tested your soil to ensure that it's what pittosporums prefer? That could be a problem. I had trouble keeping them alive here at my house too. I finally got two pink flowered pitts to survive in my front flowerbeds (southern exposure). Other than rain, I never water them more than once a week and that's only if it's real dry (like this summer). For your other question, the site below has some fairly straight forward info for rooting cuttings. Like the lady who wrote it, I also have had mixed results. I think success has to do with the mood of the plant at the time you take your cuttings :-}

Thanks heaps.

I didn't realise pitt was a hardwood? Am having a little trouble understanding the link as my pitts don't have "nodes" so i'm a little confused still as what to do.

Hardwood in this case means a cutting that's not new/green (new green ones would be softwood cuttings). Here are some diagrams that illustrate nodes (which your plant definitely will have): http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/P/PlantGrowth.html or here http://www.namethatplant.net/glossary_twigs.shtml

Thanks for the help.

I found this and have found this the most helpful! Will wait and see if i get any results doing it this way. :)
