Going to establish a Lawn but dont know which grass?

lahore, Pakistan

Hi, i wish to establish a lawn, in an area which is cold (4-10 Degrees) in winters and around 25-38 Degrees in Summers. i dont know which grass to sow since i am looking for an all weather grass. i have read about Perennial Rye Grass and am thinking about planting it. If i could know what are the problems which i would face later? will i have to plant it each year? what should be the ratio of over seeding, as i suspect that it would go brown in summers and what type should i incorporate? i am looking for something like an exhibit Lawn with some landscaping. I have no experience i have people with me and WILL to do it since it has been my dream to establish a dream front yard, sight of which should relax me and all those who visit. what i have done so far is
1. got the complete place uprooted with Tractor.
2. removing old grass type growths out from the soil.
3. will level it and would break the lumps of soil?
4. would again plough it once?
5. It might rain by then so watering would go by itself?
6. am planning to put some sand as well?
7. Am planning to get already grown grass and plug it?
Is it correct?
Thanx

I am not sure what grass is available to you.If the perennial rye grass can survoveyour winter temps, then it sounds like it might be the best bet. However, if it is very hot there in the summer, I'm not so sure. I wonder if your temps are in Farenheit or celceus as it sounds too cold to grow much of anything.
There is a landscaping forum un Discussion forums and you might want to post there.

Your temperatures aren't the problem. 40 to 100 degrees F is less of a range than much of the US. The problem you are going to have is water. Lawns are thirsty requiring around 2in(5cm) of water per WEEK. Looking up the climate in Lahore
Pakistan, it looks like you get get between an inch (2.5cm) and and an 1 1/2 inches (3.5cm) of rain a MONTH. Jan. through Jun. and less than 1 in(2.5cm) per month Oct through Dec.

I agree on the amount of rain being your real challeng--trying to maintain a lawn in a climate where there's not a lot of rain is challenging. Do a lot of people in your area have lawns? If so you might talk to them and find out what sort of grass they have and how much money they spend keeping it irrigated. It's very possible to create a beautiful relaxing front yard without using grass but using instead plants that are more drought tolerant. Drought tolerant plants won't require as much effort to keep alive and it'll save you money because they won't need tons of water. Here are some before & after pictures from some front yard makeovers--most of these don't have a lawn and are quite beautiful http://www.sunset.com/garden/backyard-projects/outdoor-landscape-makeovers-00400000054442/page42.html

Well, St. Augustine grass can withstand your dry climate but I'm not sure if it will survive the cold. It spreads quickly and I had great success with it in the past.

I don't think cold will be a problem--lows of 4 degrees C would be equivalent of zone 9 here.

perfect, then. If only he can find it there. My in-laws had this growing in their front yard and some of it had grown into a ditch. I dug clumps and planted them in my totally bare front yard. It was completely covered in 2 years with a little fertilizing and water.

Pakistan gets a lot less rain than North Carolina (even NC in a drought year) To keep any sort of grass alive in an almost desert climate like that is going to require a fair amount of supplemental watering.

Thanx for all your suggestions, water is not a problem at all and as u have said the temp..that wont be a problem, only problem i fore see is thta of grass, i hav some australian grass available but i was told that u cant walk on it, so wats the use, then there is someother grass available...but i would find some grass to put here eventually, i wonder if i would get that St. Augustine and Rye grass here in this part, how about Dhaka Grass? but there is one people using here on Lawn Tennis Courts, very fine with light greenish colour which turns brown in Dec and Jan perhaps i would get plug ins from there. i am posting a pic of the court yard where i am planning this all i hope i am successful eventually, will post later as well.
Thanx all of you

This is what i have made now, any suggestions? i am still in the process of establishing it hoping to be successful, raised gr under the trees another gradual raise onto the right top of the gr, how would it look if i had a different colour grass roundal in the center of the lawn and on the outside it was a different colour (Darker)?
