Asparagus have red berries on the ferns in the fall. Will these red berries yeald asparagus plants?

Karnes City, TX

Yes, those are your female plants and inside those red berries are the seeds. Wait till the stem on the berry turns brown, gather them, open them, soak the black seeds overnight, plant 1/4 to 1/2" deep and wait for the seedlings to sprout. Sometimes it takes awhile--just keep them moist.

I can only assume you have new Asparagus plants as you would have seen the berries last year too.
Asparagus plants should not be allowed to flower /seed the first few years as what you want is ALL the energy to go into making strong roots that will result in more tender Asparagus shoots that are the edible part of the plant. I would be inclined to cut the seeds / stems off. I am sure there will be a forum for Asparagus that will be able to guide you better than I can, I don't grow this anymore as Years ago I took over my dads Plants that were about 20 odd years old and grew like Topsy to the extent my kids wanted to send me to the bad mothers home IF I gave them any more Asparagus. Poor kids, I told them it was full of vitamins but, I still love this plant.
Good luck. WeeNel.
