I sowed annuals in early spring but poss due to very poor rain this summer, the growth has been slow. As its now nearly sept, i have an idea to try. What if the plants that show no signs of blooms yet, if i pinch all back and disbud continuosly and i manage to overwinter them, wil they be good for early blooms next spring? So my theory is, to extend the first stages by not allowing the plant to flower, this will give me stronger plants. So they think they have yet to flower so meantime it wil grow more foliage n roots. Can this work? Its a longshot but id hate to see all these go to waste. They include aster dahlia impatien poppy viola lobelia Delphinium sweet pea. Has anyone tried this and how was success rate? I understand that they wont all survive but is there a chance?
How to extend life pre-bloom stage annuals?
Might as well try it.
How will you overwinter? in a greenhouse? or try to create a greenhouse effect over the plants in the ground?
Impatiens are very easy to root by cuttings too, so you can at least have some plants that way. You'd probaly have success with Violas, lobelia and delphinium
Dahias have to be dug up, they turn to mush in the cold
