On July 21st, I decided to see if I could grow Desert Roses from seeds. I put 12 desert rose seeds in a clear container with a damp paper towel. I covered it with saran wrap and a rubber band. I put it in indirect sunlight and kept it slightly damp, but humid in the container. Of the 12 seeds I originally tried, 10 grew to healthy seedlings.
Once they were too big for the paper towel, I moved them one by one to another container with an inch of regular potting soil. These containers have clear plastic lids. I misted them with water about every day and kept them covered with the plastic lids to keep it humid by setting the lid on top (but not snapping it shut). If the soil was still damp the next day, then I wouldn't mist the soil, but I would leave the lids open for the soil to dry out (the containers do not have holes in the bottom). They are now getting too big for the containers. The leaves are almost touching the tops of the lids. I need to replant them in their own pots. I'm not sure what kind of pot to use or what type of soil. I've included a picture of what I have now (sorry for the crappy picture... I just took it - at night)... I put a quarter in there to show the size. The height is the size of a quarter. I cannot believe how quickly they grew.
Any advice on type of pots and type of soil? What about fertilizer? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I live in Florida if that makes any difference....
