Instead of planting tulip or daffodil bulbs in the ground in the Fall for Springtime blooms, can I plant them in a flowerpot instead? I would like to pot some up in the Fall and leave them out all winter. Can this be done? If so, are there any special preparations? Thanks
Planting tulip or daffodil bulbs in a flowerpot?
No preparation required so long as they are out door bulbs and not treated with hormones for indoor planting.
Here we always plant tubs of bulbs up for early spring, to do this get good quality compost (not bulb compost) add some broken croc or stones etc to the bottom of the pot
about an 2 inches deep, this will help with drainage as the last thing bulbs like is sitting in wet soil that rots the bulbs.
Get a large bucket or wheel barrow, add your compost and mix into this some multi purpose plant food (little balls) put about 5/6 inch into the bottom of the pot, add the daffodil bulbs, about 4 inch more soil mix, then add the tulips, you can also add another layer for say spring Iris, Snowdrops, Crocus etc, this will give you flowers and colour over a longer period, water them well and leave in a sheltered area till you see shoots through the soil (you can also store the filled pots in garage or cellar etc, around Jan / Feb you should be looking for good shoots and placing them outside to enjoy.
I leave my bulbs in the same pot for about 3 years IF they are giving off a good show in spring, remove the top few inches of soil after the foliage had died down and been removed, put fresh compost back to replace this and start again by sheltering till new year and bring into position for another year.
Good Luck, WeeNel.
WeeNel, thank you so much for the great info. I will definately try this! :)
You are very welcome PA girl, I love planting these bulbs in pots as they get placed by the front door to give some early spring colour, hope your's is a success too, very few things can go wrong, just done allow the pot to sit in saucers of water like i mentioned or this may rot the bulbs with too wet soil. Just plant, and enjoy.
WeeNel.
Thanks for the info WeeNell. I always go a little nuts in January and february for green stuff. Think I'll try the spring bulbs this year.

I can just see the whole of USA covered in tubs and pots of spring bulbs ha, ha, ha. good luck and enjoy. WeeNel.
LOL I can think of worse things!!!!
Let's make it a mission in our gardening life, by planting up containers with spring bulbs and every time spring arrives, memories will call us all back to our times spent on Dave's. Now there's a great gardening community project, that could go world wide eh, anyway good luck and just enjoy. We all need things to cheer us up Cando, could this be it ehhh. WeeNel.
Sounds like a great idea to me! :)))
