Building a mounded bed base

Many gardeners in Anchorage, Zone 3, build a mound to put their perennials in, in order to have warmer soil during our 3+-month growing season. How would I build such a mound in the middle of my lawn and how should I structure it? I was thinking of a crescent shaped bed to complement a "peninsula" of trees and wild plants jutting into the lawn area.
