Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Here's a closer look at it-sure wish I'd gotten a clearer photo, but I'll probably never get this lucky again.

Very cool duc! Great catch!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Duc, that's AWESOME! I can't believe he has both feet around the other's bill. I didn't even know they did that. Amazing!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Very cool duc!!

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Quote from Elphaba :
Darn it! How about this one? It's blurry so it must be a least bittern.

Yep, that one is! Orange patch on the wing.

Duc - amazing hummers!

Lakeview, OH

I found out that the hummers we have like the sugar water better than the store bought ones, so we filled up the big feeder and I put some petroleum jelly on the hook to discourage the ants, and we filled up both of the little ones with fresh cool sugar water. Will put some jelly on the little one tomorrow, maybe it will stop them for awhile at least.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Thanks for your nice comments girls.

You did great Nanny with the Pileated WP, birds are hard to photograph, as they are always on the move.

Duc, wow, one in a million shots of the Hummers, great catch!!!

Elphaba, glad you got your Bittern, is it a lifer?

I thought the Swallows had already left, but found this Barn Swallow today.

will the jelly at least slow the ants down until we can get a spray can cap? We just filled the feeder up, we don't want the ants to spoil the sugar water until the hummers get to eat it. Mama hummer came back today and perched and drank for about 3 minutes while we watched, we thought she was going to burst!Lol!

PERTH, Australia

Wonderful shots, everyone. Duc, that Hummingbird having the other one by the beak is astounding.

Great shots all.

Love the woodpecker, Nanny. You really are a Pileated magnet. Truly the Queen of the Woodpeckers. Congrats on seeing all of those Pileateds.

Duc, those hummer shots are fantastic!

Margaret, love the color on the Galah.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Burn nice shot of the swallow. We had four of our swallows return today, but they just kept flying past us and not landing on the deck railing.

Margaret, beautiful photos of the parrot and galah-both would be awesome to see.

Here's one of my Brewer's Blackbirds looking at us through the window.

Marlton, NJ

Nanny, That juvie male is adorable! love the other shot too.

Duc, Nice shots!

Lakeview, OH

Ok, nanny_56, how do you do it? I would love to have a Pileated eat where I could get a pic but if I put the suet cake on the tree, the squirrels would have a hey day with them, how do you keep the squirrels from eating the suet before the birds get it?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Margaret, your parrots are just BEAUTIFUL! Can't believe that you get to go out and see that all the time.

Burn, the least bittern is not a lifer but truthfully, I have yet to get a really good look at one. Tried to capture some swallows while I was there, but didn't do it. Love yours.

Duc, nice blackbird!

Nanny, soooo jealous! Lovely family photo. Send that baltimore down here!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

teddy, the squirrels do eat the suet....that is just a fact of life! It is a sacrifice I make to have all these woodpeckers come to my yard. Really it is only really, really bad when I have the squirrels, jays, grackles & starlings hitting the suet along with all the woodpeckers. There is about a four week period where I fill them almost everyday...but I buy cases ahead of time and get stocked up now so I am ready for it.

Elphaba, the orioles are on their way for sure! Lots of them in the area right now on the way south! I enjoyed hearing them on my walk this morning.

The house sparrows are the ones here that really go through the suet. And then the starlings when they are around.

South Hamilton, MA

We use the suet with red pepper & the squirrels leave it alone. If you make your own, I would sugest adding the pepper.

So far I've had two species of migrating warblers this fall -- yellow and black and white. Didn't get a pic of the B&W. Here's a yellow.

Canyon Towhee. If the jay is from the same area, it's a Woodhouse's Scrub Jay (recently split, previously included in Western Scrub Jay).
