Daily piccies vol 411

Resin, great start. Your Roseate Tern shot is really nice.

Ohhhhhhh..Nice flight shot of the RTH, Pelle.

Elphaba, I did locate the mystery bird, but could not tell, who he was. Thank for telling us. I doubt I would have gotten the name right.

So nice you succeeded in hand feeding the hummers, teddy. Good things happen, to those who wait.

Love your little Heron, with fuzz, and your Osprey, VA.

Congratulation Lily, nice one to have on a lifer's list. Glad to hear the Redheaded Woodpecker came back.

Duc, love seeing your birds, all of them, I don't get to see.

One of my regulars, is the Song Sparrow. Very soon, they will depart. Summer went so fast.;(.

Beautiful pics Burn. Love that purple finch.

Lily, congrats on the tanager!

Nanny, hope your orioles are headed this way!

The birds around here are pretty shabby looking at present. Here's a Carolina Wren.

Same wren. He almost didn't make it into the photograph! He was enjoying the sprinkler.

Went to San Jacinto Monument yesterday hoping to see a Wood Stork and I did! Also saw my first river otter! Here's the wood stork.

This was a lifer for me too -- Wilson's Phalarope.

I thought I did a good job of shooting through the lattice, it was one of those lucky ones. That shadow on the right is one of the Morning Glory vines.

nice teddy!

I still had 1 oriole on Monday...but it may be gone. Haven't seen it today. Did have another migrating adult male first thing this morning! It was so nice to hear it in the tree when I put out the suet feeders.

Nice start to the thread Resin! Great shots everyone!!!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Fun hummer shots Teddy.

Nanny, sorry you're losing your orioles, but excited that I'm gaining some! I had 5 orchard orioles hopping around the pond eating everything and 2 yellow warblers, a black and white warbler, 4 hummers and 2 Mississippi kites yesterday. Migration is very much underway!

I'm so far behind on sorting through pictures though that I haven't even gotten to yesterday's. Here's another one from the other day -- great egrets.

I'm worried about the birds that usually winter here. Most of the plants that usually provide winter berries are dead. I doubt the surviving ones will have any berries. The prairies are desolate. Might make for very good backyard birding but I don't like the price of it.

Here's a mocker that found some berries -- two in the bill is worth one in the ... no that's not right...

This is a tricolored heron right?

Thumbnail by Elphaba

Well, I was foiled again. Thought this was a least bittern but thankfully Resin has a keener eye and great knowledge and corrected my mistake -- green heron.

I just love black skimmers. I wish I'd gotten more of the royal tern in the picture. He's on the far left. There are a few sandwich terns behind the skimmer. The rest are gulls, probably laughing gulls.

My last one -- a grackle. I was hoping this was a boat-tailed grackle b/c I was in the marshy area near the coast and it has a brown eye which on this part of the gulf coast distinguishes it from the great-tailed. However, the head shape and bill make me think great-tailed with brown eye b/c it's a juvi. His tail doesn't impress me though -- so for now, he's just a grackle.

Great photos everyone!

This juvenile Bullock's (I think) Oriole just sat on the deck railing and posed for me through the window.

Elphaba....love all your waterbirds!! Would love to see all those egrets! I heard another oriole singing this morning so at least they are stopping in for a bite before they move on!

DH spotted these this morning while sitting on the deck and told me to hurry up and come see..... 3 Pileated Woodpeckers...and there was another one over on our side of the road talking to them!!

Oh nanny you are so lucky!!

Nice catch on the Titmouse duc!

Nice shots all!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

There you go again Nanny, I'm soooo jealous. But, at least you're getting photos of these beauties-good for you.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Elphaba, I just love the Egret shot. It's nice to see their natural habitat as well. You have some really great shore birds.

Nanny, your in Pileated woodpecker country for sure. wow, I would love to get a few shots of some.

Teddy those little Hummers are so neat to have around, I've spent some time with our here, today.

Sweet juvie shot of your Oriole and Titmouse Duc. Wish the Oriole would come by during the fall migration, I see them in Spring only.

I had the Cedar Waxwing at the pond today, I think this is a juvie, as he doesn't have the red on it's wings yet.

I'm not sure if this is a juvie male or a female. I had three chasing each other. One was a juvie male with a red dot showing on the throat. I also had a female, and an adult male.

here is one of our resident hummers, it was nice enough to sit there while I zoomed in on her.

would it be a bad idea to put a little dab of petroleum jelly on the wire that hangs the big hummingbird feeder? The ants really love the sugar water, the jelly did not seem to help the one little feeder, it for a little while and the ants just marched right through it and down to the feeder. Have been seeing a lot of hummers lately, have they started migrating yet?

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Burn.....that is a gorgeous shot of the CW!!

Pileated Woodpecker from yesterday....I was right underneath him. He was trying to locate the juvie which had moved to another tree! lol

oh darn...the watermark made it ugly!

Quote from Elphaba :
This is my first pic of a Least Bittern where the bird isn't a total blur.

Except unfortunately, it's a Green Heron ;-)
Least Bittern has a plain orange face, without that white moustache.

The Tricolored Heron (pic above) is right

Resin

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Darn it! How about this one? It's blurry so it must be a least bittern.

Nanny, still queen of the woodpeckers, that pileated experience sounds awesome! Cute downy too.

Burn, nice ones! Those yellow warblers are hard to get. They move so fast and they just glow. I've been trying to get good pic of one for a week. Last night a house sparrow chased one into my window. It was OK but dazed. Even dazed, I didn't get a good pic of it!

Love the hummers -- major hummer wars going one here. I've only had males so far.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Burn, love that waxwing in the pond and that warbler and hummer are wonderful shots.

Teddy, glad you're enjoying a hummer too.

Nanny, there is no bad photo when you're taking pictures of a pileated-wow!

Here's my "once in a lifetime" photo. Ever see one hummer grabbing onto another one to fight for the feeder? I accidentally caught this one grabbing hold of the others bill.
