I have a white sun parasol i recently baught and put around a trellis in my yard. Its doing well, but im concerned about the winter. Ive read up on it some and it seems it wont last through the winter... but if it doesnt last through the winter will it come back next year? If not I want to save my beautiful plant!!!! Also there are wild hunny suckles growing above it on a fence im concerned that they might take over my plant.
Sun Parasol
Hi Samantha.
I am on the border of zone 8b/9a and am sorry to say that the survival of the Dipladenia sun parasol is iffy here at best. Everything I have seen/read says hardy in zones 10 and 11. I had six last year (white, red, pink) and our colder than usual winter wiped out all but one.
I would suggest maybe digging it up in the fall after the first frost, cutting it back and overwintering it in a container. They do quite well in containers year round.
As for the honeysuckle...it is a much more vigorous grower than the sun parasol, so you will want to keep an eye on it.
I second the suggestion to dig it up and put it in a pot for the winter--no way it will survive a winter in KY.
