Plant Marker Ideas Wanted

West Bend, WI

I am new to the Daves Garden Site... And I'm not sure that I'm in the right section. But here goes!
I am looking for plant marker ideas. I have tried a couple and I just haven't found one that works for me. I live in Wisconsin so it would be great if the marker survives our weather. If anyone has ideas or resources, I would love to give a different way a try. Thanks much!

Try writing with a soldering iron on thick plastic tags - not especially pretty, but very durable, and very cheap. Pic: http://www.pinetum.org/canon/label2.gif

Thanks for the suggestion! The plastic during our winters tends to break but your suggestion made me think that I could try woodburning on paint stirring sticks. I feel motivated!!! Thanks a bunch! Happy gardening to you!

Welcome to Dave's Garden, Jenni.

Here are some thoughts for you: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/903172/?hl=stones#top

Use flat wooden Lolly-pop sticks or try cutting up heavy white plastic bottles into 1/2 inch strips and use marker pen to write on the names etc.
go to tailor or factory who use lots of thread, use the empty bobbin thread holders to hammer onto garden canes and write on them, there are many, many recycled things you can use and re-use.
I am sure there will be others with even more fancy ideas, but good luck anyway.
Good Luck, WeeNel.

You can also use plastic cutlery knives. Write on them with a marker, spray with clear polyurethane and slide them into the ground so the handle is just above soil level...they don't get broken that way and the name is readily available....and at the Dollar store they are usually a buck for 50 of them.

Lots of people use old slats from blinds, I've used seashells, popsicle sticks. If using the plastic plant markers I've read to use pencil instead of marker...just tried that out we'll see how long it lasts

Pencil does work--it doesn't fade like Sharpie markers will. Paint pens also work, or there are special markers that look like Sharpies but they're designed specifically for the garden so the UV light from the sun won't fade them the way Sharpie fades.

I've read that the silver sharpies don't fade.
