When to plant into soil?

Chicago, IL

My avocado seed is about 2 months old. I was wondering if anyone had any tips how/when to plant this into soil? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I would wait a few more weeks then plant into a pot of compost with a tiny amount or plant food added, the compost would be quite free draining so add either some fine grit say four parts compost one part grit, this is to prevent the roots from sitting in cold wet soil.
Plant the stone (seed) into the compost with the top inch or the seed exposed, this is to stop water from getting into the top of the stone and rotting it inside. Keep the seedling indoors for this year as it is a tropical plant unless it is already acclimatised to outdoors, it will not survive the winter in your zone, as the plant outgrows it's pot, you just keep potting it into a larger pot, My kids used to grow these from our shop bought avocado's but to be honest, we never had them grow longer than about 3 years so, cant tell you how long it will be before you get fruit if at all, maybe someone else will come in and tell you more than I can, but, Good luck Anyway hope you get back to me with Fruits for sale, ha, ha, ha.
Best regards. WeeNel.

WeeNel a big warm hug from Australia ...I see you are still giving great advice, I just wanted to say hello and tell you I have several seed grown avacado trees (some huge) and even though some are over 22 years old I have no fruit yet.
They make a nice indoor plant I am told but grafted is the way to go if you have the climate for them.
I know ...who can resist growing that big fat seed right ?
Lol ...hugs WeeNel and good luck with that little plant vj .

O.M.G.Chrissy where have you been, last time we chatted I was so worried about you being stuck in those dreadful fires that were burning what seemed like half Australia, great to see your still around and well I hope, will get a D mail to you later as it's very late here now. Bless you Chrissy, you were one of my first dear friends when I became a member all those years ago. thanks for the hugs, needed them of late.
Take care WeeNel.

Right back at you sweet Nel, we had fun didn't we ?

Thanks for the advice WeeNel. I just took the seed from an avocado I was eating and placed it in a cup, hoped for the best. I will plant using your recommendations in a few weeks and update the progress. I have no intention on taking it outside, will keep it as a house plant as long as possible.
