Can someone identify this plant?

New York, NY

I've had this plant for 6-7 years now but no one has ever been able to identify what kind of plant it is. I've been worried about it lately as one of the long stems has turned yellow and shriveled up. Could I be over-watering? Under-watering? Should the plant not be placed on a shelf and it's stems allowed to droop below it's roots?

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Dieffenbachia - dumb cane.

I would cut the tops and start them in a good potting mix. The stems can be laid horizontally in a tray of perlite and potting mix and should sent up shoots at some of the nodes. The stumps should send up new shoots as well. Do not keep the plant wet all the time.

Thank you so much for your help! I will definitely cut off some of the tops and repot. So happy I can now look up more information about the plant. Thanks again!

I think your plant is trying to get closer to the light on the left of the picture, thats why it's long and less foliage, it will be very dry sitting beside TV which sends out dry air.
I would re-pot the plant into new potting compost, give it some sort of support if you don't want to cut it back, and give it more light, not direct sunlight as this would burn the leaves and cause more stress to the plant, make sure you give the plant a weak liquid plant feed to help it recover, do this say every 6 weeks till the plant is growing well again, you should see new little lumps along the stem and this is an indication it is ready to send out new leaves where there are non at the moment, good care and it should be a plant to be proud of. Good luck. WeeNel.

I concur with hcmcdole; this does appear to be Dieffenbachia amoena. Looks like the popular cultivar 'Tropic White'.

i don't know much about you plant, but it's obviously that photosynthesis is playing in a huge effect. that sucker wants some light!
