Nightshade plants being decimated.

Saco, ME

Please HELP! Someone is eating our Tomatoes and Peppers from the top down. Leaves, flowers, fruits, sometimes stems (usually just broken off). After the first attack, my husband put up a 4' chicken wire fence. To no avail. Not enough space for a deer to jump into. And, we've watched our local woodchuck; she seems to be more interested in the rhubarb plants in another part of the yard. I've gone from plenty of plants/fruits for canning and/or freezing to just making do for salads and pizzas. I have always believed in taking care of/providing for God's creatures; by planting the perimeter of the garden w/lettuce and spinach for the critters to munch on. They HAVE NEVER come beyond the outside row! UNTIL this year that is. THIS year they passed by the lettuce and spinach and went for the tomatoes and peppers in the center of the garden. They seem to particularly like the John Baer tomatoes, bells and jalapenos. They pass by the hybrid tomatoes. We are at a total loss as to who our little varmint might be. Can someome PLEASE HELP?! I'd like to try putting out some store-bought plants; though it's probably to late here in Maine. But, if someone has an idea: perhaps it will help with next year.

PS. Besides the fencing, we have tried "OIL AWAY" and a VERY HOT pepper spray.

Can't anyone help me with identifying the critter eating my tomatoes and peppers? As per my posting on 8/7/11 I now have to add that they are also eating my Chinese Lanterns. I thought nightshade plants were toxic! Haven't seen any dead bodies and our little woodchuck friend has been eating my husbands Rhubarb for years. Please Help.
Thank You for any information.
