Garlic, what kind? And replanting?

Washougal, WA

I harvested my first successful bulb of garlic today. Now that the cat's not digging up my herb gardens. I have a few kinds of garlic. One kind a friend gave me, and two kinds I bought. The ones I bought was an elephant garlic (what I harvested today) and another kind I can't remember that came up as a cluster of small purple bulbs. I'm not sure why it was in a cluster because I know I didn't plant them that way. But it was last year, so who knows what happened between then and now. Does anyone have an idea of what they could be? And I know I didn't plant it in a cluster so I'm not sure what happened there. But I want to replant them so should I replant them now or wait until Fall? I'm in SW WA.

Thanks!

A garlic grows a cluster of cloves. You plant one clove blunt end down and it grows and matures back into the same form you started with. I would not replant the garlic you just harvested without putting it in the frig for a good two weeks. Ernie

I started playing with Garlic a couple of years ago. There are tons of varieties out there. If you do a search for garlic you'll find some nice sites. There are several that are red / purple / or red/purple striped. There's also a fairly wide variety of strengths. I like Elephant garlic since it's very mild. If you start searching garlic sites, you're going to be told (quickly) that Elephant garlic isn't really a garlic..I think it' some form of a shallot, but has a mild garlic taste. Whatever, I still grow it ;)

There are both hardneck and softneck garlic. The softneck is what you usually find at the grocery store. the hardneck is more winter hardy and has scapes. A number of the DG top rated plant and seed companies carry garlic. We plant hardneck garlic in October and harvest the following July.
