Hello. Does anyone have any recommendations for what can still be planted outside now and provide harvest in August/September/October before the first frost here in Zone 6a (Pittsburgh, PA)?
Thanks,
Jake
What kind of veggie plants can I plant outside now (6a)
Kale, lettuce, spinach, and even one or two carrot varieties have short growth times. Maybe Brussels sprouts... I'm pushing mine with cauliflower, too. The mountains here have many micro-climates and mine probably isn't too different than Pittsburgh (in spots).
Johnny's Selected Seeds has an excellent Fall Planting Calculator spreadsheet on their website. The link is on this page: http://www.johnnyseeds.com/t-InteractiveTools.aspx
You just plug in your average first frost date and it gives you the recommended planting date. I'm in 6a myself and just planted some kale, romaine and a bed of mixed carrots/radishes. I will be planting my beets either tonight or over the weekend some time. Greens and quick-maturing root veggies are the best options at this stage of the game.
Thanks for the info!
Cool tool, Erock, thanks.
There's also an interesting list of specific fall/winter varieties that do well in western NY state here
