Daily Bird Pics - Vol. #409

Quote from VA_Wild_Rose :

Resin... (or anyone who knows!)
What makes some of the waxwings have the red on their wings and some not?
I thought it was a male/female thing, but in reading about them, that doesn't seem to be it.
Thanks!

Partly age, partly sex. Adult males have the most, immature females the least. Immature males and adult females, intermediate.

Stunning shots from go to whoa. I have no birdies to offer at the moment. Good to see you back, Linth.

My morning highlight is finding this Osprey while it was circling overhead.

Good series, duc and rose! Got up and took a few pics around the Santa Fe case this a.m. Awoke to a water leak in the kitchen, but that is another and continuing story. Still not fixed.

Saw a female and male Western Tanager in the front yard. A pic of the male.

An Ash-throated Flycatcher in the front yard. Backlit and sorry light, but you know how it goes.

Not a bird, but a rare sighting. Although we often see evidence of these guys, we seldom see them. A gopher.

Red, interesting Western Tanager. Hope the water leak problem will resolve soon. The rare sighting is rather cute, bet the grandchildren would be thrilled seeing them? I couldn't help but notice those abundant fruits tree with silvery leaves that the tanager and housefinch were on. Never have I seen olives (fruits/nuts) in real life. Are those the edible olives?

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Gee....lots of great shots...I am a bit behind.

Elphaba...no ID on the Flycatcher!

Great shots everyone. I went out birding this morning at 8:00 a.m. It was extremely quiet but observed a number of birds moving around. But, by 9:00 a.m., nothing was heard, nor moving.

After an hour or two, I was feeling like this young Gray Catbird ....... we had another hot day - 98°F.

duc, you inquired about my camera settings on my earlier photos in this thread. The settings varied somewhat. The one constant was the Aperture since I used aperture priority set at f/8. The ISO was set at 800. And, since I use my 500mm lens 95% of the time, it's on a tripod. That allows me get somewhat decent photos at even low shutter speeds. In these photos the lighting wasn't the best but not terrible. This is another of the Scarlet Tanager photos taken with the ones above. The shutter speed was actually 1/1000 using the setting I mentioned earlier. I also had the Exposure Compensation set at -1. When I have time, I will take photos of the same subject at different settings. I often preset my Manual setting so all I have to do is quickly switch from one to the other. Of course, not all subjects are accommodating.

Absolutely stunning shots everyone.
Linth, super cool shot of the vireo.
Lily, beautiful capture of your osprey!
VA -- unbelievable! Great shots.

Red, lovely! What kind of tree is in the pics with the tanager and finch? It's gorgeous.

Marlton, NJ

Wow so many great shots!

Love that Red-eyed Vireo fledgling Linth!

A few more from yesterday morning.

A Brown Thrasher ..... I think it is a young one.

A female Summer Tanager. When I first saw it, I just assumed it was a female Orchard Oriole. But, the respective bills are shaped differently.

This photo of a male was taken last year close to the same place but it illustrates a similar bill. I only saw one male this year quite some distance away.

VA, congrats on the lifer. Great photos of your birds. Loved that closeup of the osprey.

Lily, nice photo of your osprey.

Red, beautiful shot of the tanager. Cute little furbaby you have there. Hope you get that leak repaired soon.

Linth, beautiful shots of the catbird and tanager. Beautiful waxwings captures and that vireo and thrasher are adorable. Thanks for the settings info. I'm thinking that I should lower my expos. compensation more. I always put it at 0 on the bright days, but maybe one more lower might work.

This Bewick's Wren sure was a mess, but I'm hoping it's just the molting stage.

I wish I had a camera yesterday, there was a Downy Woodpecker on the Hummingbird feeder and a female hummer came in for a drink, the wp actually sat there perfectly still so the hummer was not scared off, he stayed still until the hummer got all she wanted and after she flew off, he resumed eating! I have never seen that before, usually the wp scares away the hummers but not this one.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow Teddy! That sounds amazing.
Linth, you definitely have some of the prettiest birds and you sure know how to capture them. Awesome.
Duc, that Bewick's Wren is totally cool! Nice shots. Very pretty young oriole.

I'm sharing this bird b/c most folks in the USA will not have seen one. It's usually only in the far southern tip of Texas. This one is hanging out here at Sheldon Lake. Went birding there this morning and saw him, and got some D+/C- photos. I was thrilled to see him though.

Here's another pic of the Great Kiskadee.

I''m still going through the rest of my photos. Didn't expect to see much on a blistering summer day, but had an awesome day! Saw deer, a nutria, an armadillo, orioles, greast crested flycatchers, alligators, a cooper's hawk landed right above me -- Oh and fall migration has started b/c there were tons of hummingbirds, a black & white warbler and several blue/gray gnatcatchers!

I think the container I had for water was too high so I cut half of it off and lined the bottom with stones so the birds could have a foothold, the sides and the bottom were just too slippery. I decided to give the cat food to a neighbor, it was attracting squirrels and so I decided to give it away.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

That was a rewarding day Elphaba! I'm glad to see your birds, I know, for one, I will probably never see them, if it wasn't for you.
Do hope, it's only a molting stage for you Wren, Duc. great images.

Great pix everyone, poor Robin and those that molting. Hope they'll get to the other side, sooner. Thanks Elphy for sharing that rare bird sighting. Burn, I love those Yellow Warblers. Cute juvies Duc, love them all.

Lots of great pictures everyone!!

I'm going to put up a pic of a pair of small flycatchers I took yesterday near Los Alamos, NM. I'm also putting them on the ID forum, if you want to attempt to identify, please post comments there. Not often you get a chance to get two of these little guys in a frame.

Several Bushtits were in a cottonwood behind the casa yesterday morning. Interesting, active little birds. I don't get a chance to see these at home. Got a lifer yesterday at Coronoado State Monument near Bernalillo, NM-- a Bendire's Thrasher. Got some poor pics for ID purposes, but I'm not posting.

Amazing flycatcher shot Red.

I was hoping these two flycatchers would turn out better but it was the middle of the day. The shadows were awful. Had to bleach the heck out of the photo to see these two juvi Great Crested Flycatchers taking dirt baths. Still it was fun to watch them on the path right in front of me.

Took a while to time my clicking with his squawking. Right after I finally got this pic, it flew away -- White Ibis.
