We have some Crimson Sweets that are doing pretty good even in this heat wave. Got lots of vines and some have grown into the fence. The biggest one weighs about 10 pounds or so and is about the size of a basketball. Will the stem be able to support the weight of the melon until it's ripe?? I got a little worried and have it supported by a bungee cord hooked into the fencing. The stem looks to be a beautiful green and the melon is striped all around. This was the first one that was grown on the fence and it seems to be doing the best. The others on the ground are on pine straw mulch about 3 inches deep but earlier WMs were splitting and a couple rotted on the vine but those were very small. It seems to me the WM on the fence was growing faster and looks a lot better than those on the ground. My imagination???
I've been using drip irrigation and have been watering a little more consistently, with this heat how often should we be fertilizing?? Been using Miracle-Grow crystals in the garden feeder. Any insight will be greatly appreciated...
Watermelons on a fence???
I use pantyhose to support any watermelon that grows like yours is. Kind of like a sling. I was thinking of making a smart remark about duct tape, rednecks and Texans but Ill be good : )
Your watermelon does look good!
We're growing our watermelons the same way. I can't remember what kind they are - but they are a dark green and will get to be the size of a small basketball. They are growing on a trellis and are about the same size as yours, kev. We have the exact same situation with the one that was resting on the straw on the ground. It got about two inches large and is now dying. The others up on the trellis are doing well.
1lisac, I like the idea about the panty hose supports!
