long english telegraph cucumbers

niagara falls, Canada

I have long dark green beautiful english telegraph cucumbers growing in my garden. They look wonderful but my problem is that they are disgustingly bitter and they can not be consumed. They have been in the garden approximately 5 weeks. Is this because they are not mature yet, or is it something else. I have grown other variaties of cucumbers in the past this is the first time for the telegraph cucumbers and all the other types came out perfect last year. Please help me discover why they are so very bitter. Thanks so much

As a rule, the larger the cucumber gets, the more bitter they become. I realize that this variety is noted for its really long fruit, but perhaps you might try picking them as they approach the 10 to 12 inch length, rather than waiting for them to attain their full length.

Sometimes removing the seeds from the cucumber before eating improves the taste. Also, regular watering is vital to taste in my opinion. The more regular the watering the sweeter the taste.

Most cucumbers, especially the English telegraph, like a sweet soil, so the addition of lime while prepping the bed is recommended.
