help! chimpmunks eating all my tomatoes

Brick Township, NJ

How can I prevent these cute little buggers from eating my tomatoes?

Sit next to the tomatoes.
Get a big dog to sit next to the tomatoes.

Do not try: praying, yelling, shaking fist, yelling scat or shooo, bringing plant indoors, spraying plant with hot pepper oil, tying tin plates to the plant, getting an auto water squirter, flashing house/porch lights, flashing in general, throwing cans of Progresso vegetables, throwing cans of Green Giant vegetables, throwing shoes.

Same issue in our yard with tomatoes, peppers, etc. The ONLY way to actually eat our own produce was to
buy 1" lumber and cut it into 4' and 8' lengths, attach at corners with metal braces and make a picture frame shape that you staple chicken wire to. We bought a roll of 4' chicken wire and inside of an afternoon had
framed, corner braced with L shaped metal corners or simple metal fasteners, covered w/chicken wire and
made a simple cage. Used inexpensive 6' metal corner posts driven into the ground at corners to provide
extra support, made an extra piece for entire top (squirrels don't like walking on chicken wire) and used nylon
cord to make "hinges" for one end to access the fenced garden. Or you could just take it off and on each time.

Nothing else, including having two noisy and large dogs always ready to chase them, ever made a bit of difference. We use them year after year and it was well worth the effort to be able to enjoy our own "harvest".

Good luck.

Use about 1/4 cup of the hottest sauce you can find. Tabasco or stronger. Add 2 Tablespoons of Cayenne pepper and 1 Tablespoon of liquid dish soap to make it stick. Add to 1gal of water and spray your tomatoes. It won't kill the c'monks but they definitely won't like your tomatoes.

Be very careful to rinse them thoroughly before you handle them very much and wash your own hands with lots of warm soapy water. It can burn you too.
