I want to show you something i've waited over 3 years to bloom. It is not exactly award winning material but it has promise. The scapes are strong and the flower has a white border on its outer petals. I'm hoping as it matures it will be more evident and the color a bit richer. All in all im happy with it.
OH, would help you to know that I was given the seed by a DL grower...she was not sure if the seed would grow, never mind thrive in Maine. :) I planted the seed, babied it in the house for 6 months, then planted it outside in 2008. This is it's first time blooming. ^_^ ^_^ ^_^

thanks ladies

The Snake Plant bloom does have a scent, but not a sweet one. This plant is in my cubicle and something about my cubicle makes plants happy. I don't know why but they do things here they wouldn't do anywhere else.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

You are what makes plants happy Yankeecat

Thanks Karen, I have a couple DLs with the bloom scapes almost on the ground as well. I also don't fertilize much. I usually try to add composted manure to my beds. But I'm not sure if I put enough. I haven't been watering the DLs because they seem to do fine without water unless it's really dry and Ifelt like we've been getting some rain for them that it would have been overkill to water them. Maybe they would have done better with additional water though. I would find it hard to believe the ones that aren't blooming here need to be divided because they are only on their third year in my garden and they were rather small when planted but maybe it's because they are already crowded because I didn't have enough room to space them real far apart and they are all practically touching eachother already.

Jen I'm glad someone else is interested in helping the Monarchs, just a warning from someone who has Common Milkweed naturally in their yard. Don't plant the Common Milkweed, just stick to Swamp Milkweed, Butterfly Weed and if you can get your hands on it Purple Milkweed A. purpurascens. The common one is a royal pain in the ass! It sends runners that can span your entire yard and I have them coming up right against my foundation. I swear it's like they went right under it because their roots seem to go down to China when I'm trying to dig them out! I've tried growing the Purple Milkweed from seed and I think it is pretty much impossible to find a source for the true thing. All the ones I've planted that I started from seed ended up looking like other wild Milkweeds and they seem to be just as vigorous and spreading like the Common one. I know the New England Wild Flower Society is a place that would have the real deal.

Pixie beautiful blooms I really like Fruit Loops very cute!

Joann What a pretty Crocosmia! I love that one!

ge1836 - I think it is the fertilizer. :)

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

When will people get it.
My GF who goes on in raptures about my garden and how big my plants are compared to hers, wouldnt feed anything"Too expensive"
OMG where does she think plants get food when they come fromoutside the environment.
Compost is cheap and goes a long way but you need to apply more than once every six years.
Dont get me going>

Love the soft colors on the crocosmia, Jo! Pixie, raising the DL is like having a baby! You could call it "Queen Violet".....

Pixie!!!!! a report on the Hens and Chicks poppies. The seedpods are ripening and they look just like anyother poppie. I wont keep them and wont order it again. What a disapointment.

Ac. Orange looks great. I finally saw a hummer @ mine today, no camera of course! He was a emerald green with a red head, stunning! Nice flutters BTW!!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice!

Thomaston, CT

I saw my 1st hummer of the year yesterday on the fuchsia....we only have one hummer in the east....the rubythroat....in the fall, a rufous may pop up.....like the dahlia, Allison.....mine are tiny, & the 2 that have bloomed have disfigured flowers.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cool. I had a hummer moth just inches away while watering!

Thomaston, CT

Saw some at the farm last Sat., but none in my yard as yet....they are soooo cool!

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I get the hummingbird moths quite frequently. Not very many hummingbirds though.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the dahlia came from a mix of plugs I bought off ebay

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Love the pictures Allison. I tried Helitrope from seed last year and they stayed about 4" tall and got one flower about the first week of Oct. I couldn't smell anything at all from them. I won't bother with them again!

I usually see the hummers a lot, yesterday I was at the beach all day so I wasn't home if they were around but I didn't see any today. The other day was visiting the coral honeysuckle. They also like the Lucifer Crocosmia a lot. I see them at the butterfly bush occasionally too. I always wonder if it's different ones just passing through or the same. I've heard they like 4 o'clocks but I've never seen one at them so far..

I love my Fragrant Cloud Nicotiana Thank goodness it reseeded itself because I didn't start any and I love them! This time of year I start feeling blah about my gardens and these help take that feeling away :) They are tricky to get a pic of though, cuz the flowers open in such dim light.

Sure Victor, what's my future? :) I think I'm not getting something lol

The frog was so cute. He was on my slider and I tried to get a picture from inside so u could see him stuck on the glass but my light on the cmera scared him off so I had to chase him around on the deck to get his picture..
