I have a weekend home in South western NC (zone 6b)& I have an area about 200' by 80' that gets approximately 12 hours of sunlight per day. I wish to plant enough trees to have a "folly" but also don't want so dang many that I cannot keep up with them! We love apples, peaches, & cherries & are kind of hoping for about 3 trees of each. I also want to plant a couple of grape vines along the wooden fence beside it. Does anyone have any information, recommendations, or advice?
I wish to have a small grove of fruit trees
Your local extension office will have a list or advice for best varieties in your area. We grow peaches, blueberries, pears, apples, figs, raspberries and Concord as well as scupernog grapes. I regret not planting more apple trees and a wider variety years ago. They are the most versatile of the cold weather fruits and the trees look so look nice too. I recall, before we got our place, a property where the fence line drive was lined with apple trees. The property had no house, no well...nothing and they were asking a ridiculous price for the land. However, that lane planted in apple trees was so storybook the land sold for $7,000 an acre when everything else around was under $3,000.
