Lilies

Humboldt, KS

I have lilies in the flowerbeds in front of my small house. They are in the partial shade of two large trees. Last year they were great- no problems at all. This year they grew close to three foot tall and fell over. They still bloomed but did so laying the length of the bed. can i to something about this?

It pays to stake them. You can make markers now for where you would stake them in spring. Be careful not to stab a lily with your stakes.

Do not cut off more than the top portion of the stem, where the lilies bloomed.

Did you plant the Lily's from new last year, IF so, then they would not have reached there real hight and flowering, usually bulbs are at their best after the settling in period of the first year. IF they were planted last year then the advice for staking is best, I like to place a cane into the soil and buy those plastic green plant ring suppoerts you add onto the canes, best to do this when the plants are still growing at about a foot tall, this way the foliage helps to hide the cane / ring and your flowering stems are supported all summer, remove the cane / ring when flowering is done and as suggested, place a marker for next year so you dont damage the bulbs under the soil, leave the foliage to die down and remove when dried and easy to tug away, months later.
After flowering I like to give my Lily's a top dressing of either animal manure or a handful of blood / fish / bone meal so the bulb gets a good feed as the foliage dies down, the foliage goodness And feed gets stored down in the bulb to give it energy to get good flowers for the following year, (bulbs are like our own store cupboards) we keep food on stand-by, so do bulbs.
Do you know what type of Lily's you have as that would also help identify any problems for you, even a picture would be helpful as there are so many different types of Lily plants.
Good Luck. WeeNel.
