3 years ago, I planted 2 dwarf peach trees that were supposed to do well in my NY climate.
The trees are within 10 feet of each other, same soil, same lighting conditions, about the same size when planted (3-4 feet tall). They're both about 7+ feet tall now, very healthy looking, one a bit fuller than the other.
One tree has given me upwards of a hundred peaches this year - sweetness and juiciness to bring tears of joy. The other tree (I forget the variety), has produced far fewer peaches and they're small, hard, green and the size of walnuts.
I regret that I lost the tag so I can't say what the variety is, but I can confirm that they both blossomed about the same time, both started with similarly sized tiny peaches about the size of a pea, but one just keeps growing and growing and the other just stagnates.
I first wondered if it was climate and late Spring here, but both blossomed at the same time, started with the same tiny fruit, but one just stopped at the size of a walnut. Is it possible that the bad one is pollinating the good one, but the good one isn't helping the bad one.
Do some peaches need different soil? Different watering requirements? I don't spray as it's important that we are able to each peaches directly off the tree. I'll share with a few ants for organic peaches.
I'm so excited about having fruit trees in my yard for my 3 year old to appreciate food from the yard (just added 2 apple and a nectarine for a couple of years out) and next year will add cherries, apricots and plums (dwarf trees) so that we have fruit throughout the season in a few years when the trees mature.
Any suggestions? I have somewhat limited space in my yard, so I'm inclined to rip it out unless I can find a way to get some fruit. This bothers me because I put both of these trees in the summer my daughter was born and if I understand right, I need a pollinator for my good tree, but I just can't see keeping a non-productive tree to pollinate a productive one.
Peach tree - one is top producer, one is unproductive
