shade and heat

Durham, NC

I have a small vegetable garden with tomatoes, peppers, onions, eggplant and cucumbers; would hanging a tarp about 6 feet above the top of the tallest plants in order to provide shade during the hottest part of the day, help, hurt or do nothing at all for the health of the plants during the next few days when temperatures will exceed 100 degrees?

Yes, it will help.

Hi Jeff.

In my opinion, yes it helps immensely. I grow a lot of chilli peppers and a couple of them are very prolific. So prolific that they grow out beyond the canopy where the sun pounds them mercilessly. After a couple of days of very hot weather, they start to get a black tinge to them so I know that it is time to shade them. I have a shade cloth, from Lowes I believe, that I put up to give them a break. I belive that the 90 on the wrapper means it blocks 90% of the light, but since it only covers a bit of the entire width ofthe bed, they still do well as they still get many hours of light through the sides. My goal was to knock down the midday sun when it is at its strongest. I will be putting it up here tomorrow night since Friday and Saturday are forecasted to be 97 and nearly cloud-free.

Hope this helps,
Jeff
