Whd didn't my hydrangea bloom?

Brick Township, NJ

I transplanted a pink hydrangea (not sure what kind) last year, pruned in back in fall and I have a healthy looking shrub (small) but no flowers.

Couple possibilities...first is that it's most likely one that blooms only on old wood, so when you pruned in the fall you pruned off this year's blooms. The other possibility if it was a rebloomer like Endless Summer is that plants will take time to get their roots going before they'll bloom, so shrubs may not bloom the year after being moved.

All the above from Ecrane, and not knowing which Hydrangia you have is difficult to give exact guidance but, most of these shrubs, to be on the safe side, I would either prune after flowering (yours might take a couple of years to recover and flower properly) then give a handfull of general feed to help the plant make good roots and regain energy after flowering, give a nice top dressing of either good compost or leafmold to help protect the roots over winter if you get ground frost, even if you dont, your plant/shrub with thank you for this.
To be honest, I grow lots of Hydrangia's, Climbing ones included , and all are left alone till early spring soon as I see some new little buds show on the stems, then I prune off any leggy stems, I cut the stems I dont want down to a good plump bud that is growing outwards, you can also cut them all right back to about a foot but, that guide is for the type that loose there leaves in Autumn / Winter, you can also cut the faded flowers off (autumn) for drying to make winter / Christmas dec's and they take spraying with gold, /silver too.
Good luck. hope your shrub gives you many years of pleasure. WeeNel.
