Dwarf Plum Tree Problems

Tongham, Surrey , United Kingdom

Hi
Can anyone help me
I Have a dwarf plum tree in my garden and for the last couple of years have had good fruit crops. This year a lot of the leaves have on them what I can only describe as an oily black substance. Also on a number of the leaves are small insects that look like brownish ladybirds with orange spots. They seemed to be glued to the leaves and are difficult to get off. Unusually the fruit which is ripening slowly is much larger than usual.
Many thanks

Since no one else has answered you I will give it a shot. It sounds like you have some sort of insect that sucks out the juice from the leaves and, in turn, produces a sappy substance that makes the leaves sticky and blackish. The ladybugs are there to eat what I would guess is aphids but there are probably too many aphids for the ladybugs to get under control. If you're organic, try hosing the insects off with a hard blast from your hose nozzle. If not, buy something to spray on the trees that will quickly kill the little devils. I always use Safer products which work well.
