I have a variegated redbud sport about 10 feet from the ground and want to try to make it into a tree. I would only have one shot at getting it to root. The limb is new this year and is very slender. There are only 4 leaves and they are all green with white splotch/streaks in center or from center to edge. I read your experiment and could possibly do the 2nd type of layering. Since the stem is only about 1/8 of an inch would it be better to wait until next year? Any help you could give would be appreciated.
Help Wonderweasle, Variegated Redbud sport
Hi Frankielynn--
Nice find! I have personally never tried to air layer anything that was less than the diameter of a No. 2 pencil, but that's not to say it couldn't be done. Plus, I'm not sure how susceptible Redbud mutations are to reverting back to normal coloring, so it might be wise to try it this year or the mutation could be gone by next year. Just make sure not to cut too deep, and keep the wound wrapping as airtight as possible. If all goes well, you should begin to see root development within 1-2 months!
