Our three-year old asparagus patch [4' x 16'] has been invaded by what I think are asparagus beetles [black with 6 white spots] and the plants are stripped. I reluctantly sprayed the plants and the ground around them. I saw at least 501 beetles! Will my plants come back next year or should I plant something else?

Unless the beetle were in the ground and ate on the roots, they should return. The quickest way to know would be to gently move the soil back and look at the crown/roots. If they are okay, the plants should be fine.
Thanks for the advice "themoonhowl". I still have asparagus! I will be much more vigilant when the danged beetles arrive next year!
Glad to hear it. Nature can be a harsh, but forgiving teacher sometimes...grin Moon
I agree with Moonhowl -- and clear up any plant debris in your patch and burn it, as that is where they overwinter; at the first sight of any beetles next year be sure to spray or dust to get rid of them. I've had my plants stripped bare in the past, too -- not a pretty sight! But after a few years of being very diligent I've seen very few this year.
