Red wasps on pepper plants

Austin, TX

This is the first year I've planted bell pepper plants in my garden and the plants have been invaded by large what looks like large red wasps with black wings. I'm not sure exactly what these things are or how to get rid of them and could use some suggetions. I don't have a picture but could get one I think. There are about a dozen out there so I'm a bit nervous to get too close.

Sounds like a predatory red wasp. Check out this pdf on beneficial insect from TAMU

Thanks for the quick response and the link. Will look around for a nest, there has to be one near by for so many to be in our garden. If they are good guys I don't want to kill them but I would like to get in my garden once in a while.

You may want to give the plants a close look also...see if you have an infestation of some sort that is attracting the wasps. You are very welcome.

In my experience, if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. I work among mine all the time & yellowjackets, too. Think maybe they have some sort of fear detector(s). I make sure they have water, also.
