yay!
I've have a feeling I have a bunch of eggs on my watercress in the pond. I've been seeing a cabbage white or two, very interested.
I'm worried about the monarch, it's probably only a 3rd or so instar and it's ust been hanging out on the top of the cage.
Daily pic. #88
How do i add that Sheila? I saw another one later, and didn't take a shot--now I wish I had.
Beautiful shot there Nan of Pipevine ST. I'm still so confused with all these Tiggers! LOL. BCH, I'm looking forward to see your photo on our DG's file. Nice find!
nutsaboutnature, you've got a Cabbage White there more than likely...
Lilly, Yah, I think you are right.
I found a first instar monarch on the common milkweed. And the third has started to eat again. phew.
Marna, thanks. Last year I was successfully raised a couple BSTs, missed out on all the monarch cats. I hope to at least have a few of each this year. Thanks Marna for the confirmation. It's challenging to keep the milkweeds cutting fresh for any extended time. One must collected them several times a day to satisfy the cats' appetite! Good luck with those 1st and 3rd instars.
Hey, you all should have seen me the other day, I had one of those magnifying headsets on my head looking for cats.
I'd love to be the fly on the wall. In this case, a damselfly on a nearby branch watching you Marna. lol
OK.....BCH... Just do photos like you post here on this thread at the bottom of the id page. http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/55/ You can type in a short comment or leave blank.
Lily...yes on the TST male and dark female!! I just went to a presentation that Dale (lep farmer) gave last night and so it is a little clearer on the sexes now. Won't be long my old brain will confuse me again though! LOL!
On the freshness of the mw leaves, I find if I collected early in the morning or late at night they stayed fresher longer. Also take a cup with a moist paper towel with you to gather them in. Not just water because there maybe small cats on the leaves. After I inspect them inside I rinse them in water, then poke the ends in wet foam even if I am not using them right then. I usually collect only in the shade if I have to do extras during the day. Old pic...no Monarchs this year!
Marna....Yes..I would love to have seen the cat hunt gear! Glad the wee one began eating again.

OK, it's posted to the bug files, thatks for your help
Thanks Sheila for helping out with helpful info. on caring for MW cuttings for monarch. Love that set up you've. Congrats BCH on the very first pf's contribution -- by you. There will be many more. Happy joy, joy!
Thanks, now I'm off to the dentist!! No Happy happy joy for me
Yup, I'm no help with that last one. It's interesting looking. But it's the lavender on the mw's blooms that got me. lol
LL, could that be a Great Purple Hairstreak?
BCH, I'm checking my guide, no luck so far on that black and white one.
Okay, I'm going with the eight-spotted forrester moth

found 6 eggs, but no cats
Thanks. nothing without google and my guidebooks.
I spotted a teeny, tiny little orange butterfly a while ago. I raced in to get my camera, but it was gone by the time I got back outside. I doubt if I could have got a picture, anyway, since it was darting around pretty fast.
It couldn't have been much more than 1/2-inch long & very bright orange.
sneaky butterfly!
Marna, indeed it's the Great Purple Hairstreaks! I was thinking, ummm it rubs its hindwings when nectaring.... Thank you for the i.d.
Beautiful hummer on the 'candy lilies' J.
Nice job, BCH. Congrats on the newly eclosed monarch. Butterflies outdoor too are such a relief sight. I've seen Tigerswallowtails some skippers. But not much else.
Saw a BST out on the dill in the garden...gonna go check and see if there are any eggs!
Hi Lily, we are starting to see more and more--i have some type of black swallowtail flying around, but i can't get a photo. we have several types here it could be. BST, BFTST, spicebush, or pipevine. It could even be a red spotted purple
good luck with that nanny
Haven't seen a BST, but found two cats on the dill tonight. probably 3-4 instar. Don't know how i've missed them all week.
I found 6 monarch eggs yesterday, which was good because i lost the two cats I had. No Idea why.
