Purpleleaf Plum "Prunus Cerasifera" root stock

Winnemucca, NV

I purchased a small, rather sad looking tree last year in mid summer at a sale. It struggled through the summer, not growing much, but looked healthy enough when winter came. This year, no growth came on the old wood, but rather directly from the ground. The leaves are not purple, but green. My question is whether these trees are grafted onto another root stock, and if so what kind of tree I can expect to have now? Thank you.

Hi Fluer...did a bit of searching and reading, and discovered that the Myrobalan, prunus cerasifera is the main choice of rootstock for plums, prunes, and other "stone fruit". I believe that the Purpleleaf is Prunus Cerasifera x Prunus armeniaca, so it is possible if grafted to be on P cerasifera.

Thank you so much for your research. I had found some of the same sites, but my tag only had prunus cerasifera, without the x prunus armeniaca extension. The tag also said no fruit, and most of the sites I read said that the tree produced small round plums, so I was confused and not sure what I had to begin with, much less now. It says purple plum, but it would appear that the prunus cerasifera name is for this myrobalan root stock, not for a purple plum. Do you see my confusion? Also, I still can't find any description or picture of the myrobalan root stock that would show what type of tree I may (or may not!) now have. I guess I'll know in fifteen years or so, won't I! Thanks again for your help.

Wow! Great info, thanks again. You are obviously a search master! Those sites gave me a lot more info and I think I saw some pictures that resemble my tree. On a side note, one of them was of a small round yellow plum that looks exactly like some trees we used to have on our riverbank when I was a kid. I can still taste their tart/sweet flavor, warm from the sun! I've never seen them anywhere else and so it was great to know I could actually purchase a tree if I wanted to. Thanks so much for your help.

I have a challenge for you moon, I have been looking and looking for a landscape thread I ran accross months ago that had a link to I think "pb.base" with pictures of beautiful beds full of blooms and full sun. The only thing is I don't know who the DG'r is. I have scanned all the landscape threads, over and over again. Wish everyone would post pics like this.

I know.....I should have kept track of it or at least her name. My bad...

LOL That wasn't a request for a challenge Peg...GRIN But...you said a landscaping thread...you sorta know what ones you go to...so, skim through these and see if any of them jog your memory.
