we have one of these in a pot on the patio, it is about one year old and we have noticed that the buds have fallen off, could you tell me why this has happened.

Have you checked the plant for spider mites? Or aphids? They are also susceptible to scale and mealy bugs, especially in containers. Also, too much water...and not enough water can cause bud/leaf drop.
