When do I plant my avocado seed?

Pittsburg, CA

My Avocado seed has been in a container for around 3 weeks now and has a very nice 6 inch stalk with 4 very cute leaves on it - there is also another stalk around 1.5 inches coming out of the seed. When should I plant it in the ground? (California)

I would probably wait until spring if you can. Summer is the most stressful time to plant anything, so at a minimum I would wait until we're heading into winter when it'll be cooler and rain is on the way. But since you're not that far from the lower end of hardiness for avocados a young newly planted one could be susceptible to damage over the winter, so if you want to be really safe I'd wait until early spring. That way you miss the worst of the winter cold but still get it in the ground in time that it can be established before next summer's heat hits. If you do decide to wait either for later this year or the spring you'll probably need to repot it along the way since it looks like it'll outgrow the cup that it's in before too long.

If you want to plant it sooner you can of course, but you'll have to be extra vigilant on the watering, and it'll benefit from you rigging up some shade for it to protect it from the hot sun.

Hello satodd,

Is your seed still in water or is it planted in soil? I have attached a pic of my seed that is still in water. Not sure when to transfer to soil? Thanks
