"Turn the Watermelons?"

Montgomery, TX

My handyman told me yesterdy that he "turned my watermelons" after doing some other tasks in the garden. Did not bother to respond as he is a part time Bullwinkle the Moose... (Mr. Know -It-All ; )

Being first time gardener, I would not think twisting ANY stem is a good idea. Would enjoy input from others who have grown watermelon.

I've never turned my watermelons. I'd be telling him to keep his paws off my garden.

I'm with you. He told me AFTER he did that. They've been doing fine so far! I will tell him next time he comes over.

Can you tell, did he really 'turn' them? It almost sounds like he was jerking your chain.
Kind of like telling me I need to change the air in my tires on a regular basis. Yeah right....

If he did indeed, I would ask him to not do so in the future. If I am not mistaken, the yellow spot on the bottom also helps indicate ripeness.

okay, so, we were getting rain, a little bit every day, with an occasional deluge. The last watermelon I had on the vine I found out sort of semi-exploded - kids said there was a big crack down the watermelon, that the ants were in it, and they said when they threw it into the compost (I was at work), it just 'blew up'.

was it that i left it on the vine too long (it didn't sound hollow when thumped), or was it the excessive rain?

thanks.

oh, they were jubilee watermelons.

Never had it happen with Jubilees, but I have had Crimson Sweets ferment and explode. Usually from a combination of sunburn damage and leaving them to get over ripe.
