Hot July Blooms

Arlington, TX

The species is but this variety beasbiana or something like that is not. Still its a very hardy plant and its close relative is native. It's also a very tiny little plant.

Coryphantha (Escobaria?) hesteri. Definately a TX native, I think it grows no where else. Pic has noon shadows but you get the idea. I haven't tried to grow this one outside but this year its overwintering outside. Suppose to be very cold hardy. I just need to protect them all from ice storms!

Cheryl, did you get that last one at an RU? I have an unidentified cactus that I think Broncbuster gave me a few years back and it looks a lot lot that one.

Arlington, TX

No, it was mail order from Miles to Go. C. hesteri is a pretty small cactus and not that common. If you have a pic, and can describe the flower, I might be able to help you figure out what it is.

Whoa, where have I been? :) Glad I found this thread. Sometimes I only check the ones I'm "following" and forget to check the new ones. Anyway, I LOVE all the flowers, cool cacti and other goodies above. I will take a few pics today and share. I've been so focused on veggies, it's time to do flowers!
And Sweetmommy, if you read this, I adore that Blue Rim Lisianthus!! I'm going to look it up now. I've never seen that before and I love anything that blooms blue or purple! Janet
Here's my faithful hibiscus, Luna Pink Swirl.

Minerature water lily keeps putting out one bloom at a time. Still, its enough for me. The red one is finally producing a bud.

You have done very well with your pond Cheryl.

Arlington, TX

I truely enjoy it, green water and all. I wish it were bigger but that would mean more work. Also, I put it right where I sit in the shade so I can enjoy it more. The bed its in is outside my kitchen door so I can see it from there too and love to watch birds drink and bath there.

Wow, you guys are active! My subscription lapsed, I didn't check this thread for a few days and it took 15 minutes to catch up. Love all of your photos! Thank you Buster, I'll let you know what I find out about the cherries. I'm hoping it's just this heat that they don't enjoy. I think I'm getting "waterer's elbow" from holding the trigger on my hose! Please rain!!!!!

Bariolio- I get the Blue Rim Lisianthus from Enchanted Gardens in Richmond. They have been blooming for 3 months now (with dead heading) and seem to have new growth at their bases. They are so pretty!

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is the unidentified cactus. I believe that broncbuster said that it grows wild on his property. It has pale yellow pink flowers with a yellow center. I have had it for several years and it is only 4 inches tall. You can just see a few babies at the base of the parent plant that I grew from seeds I collected from it.

I think it might be Escobaria hesteri but I am not certain. Post a clearer pic on the cactus and succulant threads. Those folks can ID it for certain. Make sure you can see the spines clearly.

Ok, I'm just a little bit embarrassed to say that I already ordered *6* packets of Lisianthus seeds from a business on E-bay (another39again)!! TWINKLE BLUE BLUSH HYBRID, 2 of ABC 2-3 BLUE RIM , CINDERELLA BLUE and 2 TWINKLE VIOLET HYBRID!! Out of all these seeds, maybe I can get one to grow. I also got some very cool-looking purple radish seeds (Hild's Blue Winter Radish), and some Creole and Black from Tula tomato seeds. If you are looking for some very different plants and veggies to try, check them out! I ordered this morning and they are already in the mail.

As for my hot July blossoms, have yall ever seen the Musical Notes bloom? Mine is just about to. This is a plant that looks deader than a doornail every winter and comes back in Spring!

Your flower from the dollar store IS verbena!!

Portland, TX(Zone 9b)

Love the verbena...this is my first year with it, and it sure is hardy...little water and blooms like crazy. I too got mine from a seed packet. That is the only plant that came up out of the packet during this drought.

Cool pics.

Bariolio- Don't be embarrassed! I've gotten lots of hard to find seeds & plants on Ebay. Some grew but many did not. auctioneersbd has terrible things but I got a nice Crabapple & Persimmon from patrongardener. I found Water Hyacinth (impossible to find in Texas and only for my pond) and Water Lettuce on Etsy.com along with some great heirloom veggie seeds.
Love your Clematis!!

SweetMommy, water hyacinth is prohibited to sell, own or grow in Texas http://www.ntwgs.org/articles/illegalAquatics.html .
The worst is you could get fined. But I really encourage you to just dispose of it for the ecologies sake. I'm sure the danger of your pond flooding over won't happen anytime soon, but if it should, seeds can be carried to other waterways.

Back to lurking and loving the blooms.

Arlington, TX

Water lettuce is illegal to and the fine is not cheap.

Oh, I didn't see the water lettuce. Sorry, Sweetmommy :0(

S. pentstemonoides has a long bloom time but is definately not drought tolerant for me.

That is a lovely clump Cheryl, your plants sure are healthy.

Arlington, TX

I baby that one because I only have the one. None of my winter sowing came up. I am going to try some cuttings. Is spring or fall better for that with this plant?
C

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Spring is better, bur i have had luck rooting the little side shoots that develop on the stem after it is done flowering.

Arlington, TX

I might try some this summer. Not sure where I would put these, they get big and spawl a lot. But you can't beat the color or length of bloom.
