What kind of soil does this vine grow best in I started seeds in jeffy pots using jeffy seed starter soil . The seeds sprouted good and the vines looked real fine I planted the pots outside around May 20. in average garden soil. At first they seem to be growing real good but now they just seem to be standing still not much growth. Should I fertilize a little or not.
Cypress Vine
be careful planting this cypress vine...can be invasive. I planted the cypress vine like you first in jiffy pots and then in the ground. When it finally took off it was very fernlike and pretty the first year and then the second year thousands of baby plants were everywhere. It choked my asparagus and gardenia and now i pull them like weeds...so, to answer your question if it is not growing...i don't think it is a fertilization problem. They are very hardy once established. give it some time and make sure it is getting at least 1 inch of water a week. Use your finger to decide if it is too dry. If it feels even a little moist do not water. Good luck and be careful!
I totally agree with nicki on this plant--it is very invasive. It's not choosy about soil as mine did the same as discussed above--first year it was very pretty growing up a light pole but the following six years have been a constant battle of pulling them up and even spraying with Roundup to keep them at bay. They grow everywhere in the yard and attempt a takeover of my garden every year. Very pretty plant and the hummers love it but just be very watchful with it. BTW, I started out with only two small pots of it--one plant per pot.
You might research how it behaves in your area--PA is a lot colder than MS and AL and some plants are much better behaved in colder climates vs warmer. I don't know if that's true in this case, but I'd do a little research before you pull them out. I do agree that they shouldn't need a lot of fertilizer though. If they're not growing now--what's your weather like? Plants tend to shut down to some extent when there's a ton of hot weather, and I know much of the country has been hotter than normal this summer. Chances are if it cools down a bit you'll see them start growing again.
