I have a 2" diameter pole, about 15' tall, in my back yard that I want to cover with Boston Ivy. How much root/ground space should I leave it (depth + area)? It's kind of in a traffic area, so I want to maximize the walkable space around it....
Thanks,
Brian

I ask about depth because I may just build a container/box around the base of the pole rather than try to arrange the paving stones and walkway around it.

I think you'll need about 3 feet around if you have it (obviously it could grow wider, but you'll have to keep training it to go up the pole or cut it back) and about 6 inches deep. If you don't want to go 3 feet, could go 18 inches or so, but you'll have to guide it to where you want it to go. Since it's high traffic, I would definitely put some kind of border around it.
