Let's See New Lilies Sprouting #4

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Did you know that you can, within reason, request a specific lily? I very much liked my first freebie, requested it again, and got it. And 3-4 years ago the freebie was Silk Road.

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

Oh my. What a freebie! I am buying it along with a mix of others, orientals, OT, asiatics, etc. I even told them that they could substitute as long as they didn't pick or orange or yellow. I have a fair amount of that color. Next time I will give the request a try. I placed an order with Schreiners and the freebie was a $40 tall bearded iris. I was surprised and thrilled.

WOW Donnamak Thats a great lily

Better yet, Wayside, the same year, was trying to sell what were obviously Judith's Silk Roads for $14.95 each. I suspected that they got them for much less and marked them up , and I figured that if I was going to pay that much for a lily, I'd pay the hybridizer.

Well, I guess the price was too high for a lot of people, so they lowered the price to $12 for THREE! As you can imagine, I jumped at that, so with Judith's freebie, I got four Silk Roads for $12.00. All four bulbs were fantastic.

Thank you, dear Judith Freeman!

OMG, White Flower Farm is selling Silk Road for $16.95 EACH. Sorry, but that just seems inappropriate. Judith is selling Silk Road for $8 each, or $22 for 3.

Beautiful. I really like tht one. I think I figured out that the one above of mine is Blackbird. Ha! I knew I liked your lily. I just realized that it is on list coming from the Lily Garden this fall. Neat. How long have you had it and how tall is it?

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I've had them for years. They reproduce really well. I started with three and had so many I moved them to a bed and then started giving them to people. I paid $42 for three, so be happy! It's my favorite lily. Here it is in different locations. They started in a grass bed. As you can see, they bend gracefully.

And added drumstick alliums, which are just smashing with them. This is two years later.

There were so many of them I dug some up and put it in a bed with blue platycodons that were already established. Really smashing!

Oh nice! Good idea. I have tried the bellflowers once but they just didn't take. I do have a lot of tall campanula that would work though. New Giant I think they are called. When they come in I will make a note of where to put them. thanks

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Even as the alliums fade, you get a very cool look. As you can tell, I love this lily. If I could only have one, this would be it. I've had them fro at least 6 years. I've never lost one.

And they mature really fast. I envy you the gasp you are going to produce when you see your first ones in bloom!

How funny! I can't grow campanula! That's why I have platys!

(Mary) Anchorage, AK(Zone 4b)

I just hate the waiting for that first gasp... counting from now that would be almost a year. :(

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL!

Crystal Blanca (like Casa Blanca, but shorter) a bit marred by the rain.

Nice. I have some I planted last year but they are still buds. Maybe another two weeks for flowers?

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

I have some just blooming and some in buds, so you're on track.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

DONNAMAK I had no idea drumstick alliums bloomed so late. I will plant some this fall.Had hoped they would bloom with iris. Thats June here.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh yes, ge, they bloom for me primarily in mid to late July, but some show color at the very end of June. Easy peasy too!

Salmon Star is so beautiful!

I have Forelock on order with J.Scheepers I must check it to be sure of bloomtime.
Thanks

Parma, OH(Zone 5b)

DonnaMack do you need to stake your 'Crystal Blanca' ?

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

No, it isn't necessary. It stand straight and tall in the ground. That's one of its advantage over Casa Blanca, which I love and also have. And I have never lost a Crystal, but the dozen Casas I once hade have dwindled down to 2. In fact, when I dug up one of my Crystals to move it, I was thrilled to see that it had formed two good sized bulbes, which were attached to it by a strand of some sort. So it increases readily too!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the late alliuns info Donnamak.
I re arranged the area where I planned to put them,Front and center now.
