Hi, a neighbor recently gave me a small orchid plant but I noticed that the roots are not healthy as they are not fleshy, most is only the string inside of the root and also I noticed that there is algae growing inside of the pot and inside the medium. Now, I know orchids don't grow in soil. I'll buy the orchid potting mix but I'd like to know how do I go about removing its present potting mix and putting it in the new mix?
How to change orchid plant soil?
I'd pull it out of the pot and shake/tap it a bit to get off as much of the old soil as you can without beating up the plant too much. Also if you find any slimy/mushy roots that look rotten I'd trim those off before you put it into its new pot.
Do you know what kind of orchid it is, or can post a photo?
They don't all like the same potting media.
I'll post a photo later today, but the media that its on right now is mostly cork.
It looks like a phalaenopsis to me. They prefer fast draining medium or coarse substrate.i.e. bark chips, charcoal pieces. They sell prepared mixes at any big box store. Look up care for phalaenopsis to learn more.
