We've lost more than $5,000 worth of plants and equipment over the last four years to thieves who come back every spring, summer and fall. A police officer recommended we mulch our garden with noisy pea gravel to target harden it against thieves. He also recommended we plant thorny "ornamentals". Lighting it brightly and erecting a 4" wooden fence didn't help because the thieves stole or broke the lights and fence repeatedly. Our garden faces a major street and is shady. We live in Climate Zone 6a. We don't have much money left to replant AGAIN and the gardening season is half over, anyway. Our questions are:
1.) How will pea gravel affect our garden?
2.) Are there any other noisy mulches that would be ecologically better and readily available?
3.) What can we plant that would be cheap and cheerful, and would still grow well in what remains of the gardening season (it's the end of June)?
Thanks so much for your suggestions on how to inexpensively target harden a garden against thieves.
