Hi all, caught a dorsal view of this lovely Redspotted Purple this morning. (I almost forgot the pix as BCH did above, lol).
Daily Butterfly Pictures #87
LOL! You can tell we are desperate for bf pics when we are showing parts! LOL! Wish I had them!
THAT is so funny Sheila! Love the flower that is on, Kim!
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/263082/ Here is more info. on the flower Marna. Okay, Sheila, here is an encore. lol
Oh Chris, yesterday I wrote a whole long fritillary post and then my application quit. D'oh. So I'll try to recreate my brilliance here. ha.
First of all, you might want to get a good guidebook. I like Kaufmann's north american guide. It has description on the left side of the page, and the pictures on the right. you'll start learning more and more with every sighting..... I think that picture is an Aphrodite Frit.
Thanks Marna! I think the idea of a guidebook is a great idea..I'll check into Kaufmann's :)
Aphrodite, huh? I was looking at all of those and thinking how in the world do I see any differences LOL..

LOL, I'm with you Christine, I can't never tell.
aaahhh...Pretty!
Whoa! Such bright combo. I need shade. lol. Good job, BCH.
Thanks, but the credit goes to DW who took the picture--she has a good eye!!
I did grow the Zinnia from seed though--LOL my contribution to beauty
That's what we called team-work, BCH. You both did wonderful.
That is so cool. Thanks for sharing!
Holy Cow BCH, can't believe you even have had cats! I've seen ONE monarch this season in the garden and my milkweed is revealing no cats.
Good Job!
Kim, I *thought* that looked like a clethra. pretty.
Jack, I'm jealous of your duskywing. Still trying to see some here.
Very nice having success with those Monarch, BCH. I'd like some cats here please. lol Thanks Marna.
I read several websites that cover butterflies and definitely they all indicate a geographically widespread absence of all types of butterflies. The condition certainly exists in my area. For example, last year I had large numbers of Common Buckeyes and their caterpillars were constantly in my Snapdragons and many of them pupated there...this year, I haven't seen a one. Last year I had tons of Monarch butterflies and caterpillars...this year I haven't seen a single adult and have found only one early-star caterpillar. I have only seen a couple of Swallowtails and Hairstreaks. I will share a few of the photos I have been able to catch but, for me, they just haven't been here this year. I sure hope that this is just an aberration.
Bob
Thank you for sharing.
Looking good BCH and Bob!!
Nice to see someone has cats and are protecting them. Bob...we will take them all torn tattered no problem!
Lily what is the plant?.... I like that too.
It's a Clethra or sweet pepper bush. Though, it does not make peppers. Or not the pepper I had in mind. lol.
Oooops, forgot the link; here's it Sheila. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/263082/
Thanks Lily....no one posted in TX....read the review comments and saw one that said "Grows naturally in wet places"....guess that is why..LOL!! Not much is wet around these parts in our summers.
Thanks everyone for your pictures and comments! I am learning so much here. We are having a butterfly drought here also, but are still having some luck w/ raising our monarchs--we have released about 30-40 so far this year. We overwintered three BST's in our fridge, which is new for us, and one made it, so here it is. Next year we hope to overwinter more--though we might need a bigger fridge!
WTG BCH! I tagged 50 last fall.....forgot to check to see if they were recovered anywhere. Got to pull my paperwork and check.
Holy Cow. Ohio to Mexico. Amazing!
Lily.....look on this site under 'migration and tagging' for the info. You have to pay for the tags and log in the info; then they pay people in Mexico $5 for any they find. http://monarchwatch.org/
Woohoo!! Just went out and checked, I had one recovered also!!
I tagged in October and it was recovered 01/28/11 in Cerro Pelon MX by Melquiades Moreno de Jesus.
