Daily Butterfly Pictures #87

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

waving back at Chris ~~~~~~~~~~ You will learn the names of butterflies really quick here on this thread. Lots of nice people. You'll love it here.

Great pics burn!

(Chris) Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the ID and the compliment, burn! I think later today when the rains get here, I'll go back through some of the old threads and see what names I can learn. I love butterfly pics, and dragonflies..and bees LOL.. in fact, I'm out of here right now to go to a local park and see what I can find!

Here's a monarch from last summer..I love this pic because it shows off the "polka dots". :)

Glad you saw some on your monitoring route Marna! Nice one burn & clan! Nothing here...but I did buy a butterfly bush today and got it planted.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Nan, here is hoping you'll get lots of visitors to the newly planted butterfly bush. Marna, that's a very nice list of Fritillaries you've seen on the monitoring route. Love those photos you've shared Christine.

Portland, TX(Zone 9b)

Nice pics Mrs Ed, burn and Clan! Man...the butterflies have dried up in South Texas! I saw 1 unidentified skipper this weekend and NOTHING else. Between the hot windy conditions and the drought, I guess the BFs are elsewhere at the moment. I hope the fall is better for sightings. I got spoiled in the spring seeing as many as 10 different types in the back yard in one day.

I just have to water enough to keep some flowers around for the fall return.

No butterflies here today either, but a lone dragon fly was present.

I went out to Walnut Woods State Park.. didn't find any that would hold still long enough to let me get a picture lol..(honestly, I think I saw a grand total of 3 different ones) but no wildflowers out there either :( This was really the first time I've gone to this particular park..love the bird blind that they've put up, but the hiking trail was nothing but green (which is alot better than brown or white!!!)

Cem, love that dragonfly..reminds me of the ones down in Oklahoma City where I lived :)

Kissimmee, FL

Fantastic shots everyone! Mrs_Ed the Frits are outstanding, how were your overall numbers? Do you have a comparison to last year? Too tired to upload pics I'll try tomorrow.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

I found this tiny white either day moth or butterfly. It's smaller than an Azure about half it's size. Searched for it, but couldn't find it. Does anyone know what it is? I will ask in the Bug ID thread also.

burn, i'm guessing it's a moth because I don't see any clear "club" on the antennae.

viceroy, the numbers were way down from a year ago the same time. Can't say I'm surprised with this springs' weather, but TWO sulphurs this year to 70 on 6/24/10… that's substantial. Hopefully we'll see some recovery. Regal Frit numbers were down too, but looked like the aphrodites were up.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

I've seen several butterflies in my yard this year, but never can get them to set still long enough for pics. Hopefully, as the flowers start to bloom they will be here. I also brought the old fruit plate in yesterday to refill it with fresh. Flowers are late this year because we had such a cool April and May, a lot of them didn't get out until end of May/first of June.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Also .... lots of dragonflies. I'm near the lake and they love my pool.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Crit, you may have more host plants than you realize around you. If you are seeing butterflies, they are coming for a reason. Check out Dale's site under "butterfly gardening" at the lists there. www.dallasbutterflies.com

Severna Park, MD(Zone 7a)

Some very nice shots in here...especially those by Viceroy, mellielong and Mrs. Ed!

Thanks Bob.

You know it's a slow butterfly day when you are excited to see a cabbage white.

And Red Admiral alone. Hard to believe that last year at this time I was having 20 or so of these.

Love all those beauties, even the cabbage white. Thanks Mrs. Ed for the pics. I saw a Black form TST maybe flitting about but she wouldn't slow down for a photo session. lol

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

i hate when they won't land! LOL.

When I monitor, I have to be certain of the ID. There were a ton of fritillaries that were likely Aphrodities, but if they don't stop long enough for me to confirm, they go in the "Unknown" category. grrrr.

I was touring Frostweeds garden the other day and saw my second Hackberry Emperor, they are even in short supply down here. No Gulf Frits, none of the normal except Black Swallowtail. I sure hope where you guys are that have bf that they stay safe and multiply. Very sad in our gardens here.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

pretty sad here too. not even the flurry of cabbage whites.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I planted cabbage thisyear for the whites and never saw them.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm hoping for a rebound. Not many are seen here either. :((

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)
