Is this Prayer Plant doomed?

Whitefish, MT

Hello folks,

I received a young, sickly prayer plant a few days back. It was in bad shape, and being a complete novice I repotted it using Miracle Gro Moisture Control (Gardening for Newbies?), and trimmed off all the black, wilted, and gross leaves. The attached photo shows the results that day: you can see it looks okay but the edges of the leaves are still black.

The next morning, those edges had deteriorated with the black "creeping" down the leaf. I used a sharp knife and trimmed the entire plant back to it's bottom stems and continued monitoring it. A few days later, I started showing some new growth, but as you can see from the following pictures even the new growth seems sickly.

Is this guy a goner? If he can be saved, what course of action should I take?

I would like to know the result of the cutting. It looks to me like it may be over watered? I can kill some plants over loving them.

Like most members of the Marantacaea, these plants like bright light, no direct sun and moist, not wet soil....but they also require high humidity and will develop brown edges to the leaves if the humidity is too low. You may want to unpot the plant and check the roots...you may have soggy roots or fungus crown /root rot.

Hi guys,

I did have growth, although it turned black even as it grew and as the original stems continued to deteriorate. I took it from the pot and inspected the roots: they seemed okay, no discoloration or funky smell, but the damage to the plant as a whole seems to have been too much. A day after re-potting, the "creeping black" had consumed the plant almost entirely and I gave it a proper burial.

I suspect the poor thing had a nasty funk when I got it, and I didn't handle it right. The other Maranta I got that day (from a different source) is still thriving.

Sorry you lost it, but glad the other plant is thriving. Sometimes they die no matter what you do.
