Summer clematis chatter...

Centennial, CO(Zone 5a)

Gorgeous pictures, Pirl!

For the one on your lamppost, do you have something there (other than the post) for it to climb?

I have a clematis on a post on my porch, but it's really climbing the fountain extension cord that runs down the backside & not actually the post. Most of my clems are climbing chicken wire on the back fence, but I didn't want that on my front porch, so I was just wondering what does everyone else do?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Lisa.

Yes, there is a metal trellis there but it can't be seen due to the growth of the Jackmanii. Here's a photo that does show it as it began to grow last year.

There is also a clear vinyl mesh (wide holes) that you could string up and when the clematis fills it you can't see it from either side. You could cut it to the size you want. I'll try to find it online since I know what it looks like but haven't explained it well.

Either I posted the picture sidewards or this new layout really has me dizzy. I hope this version is better.

Here's the vinyl netting and it is almost invisible. You can probably find it locally for less.

Great idea!

What I had "planned" to do on the porch was to wrap the post with a pretty spiral of copper tubing, but the plant grew up the cord before I could do it. :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Love, love, love the thought of spiral copper tubing. I bet the strong copper "wire" would also work. Don't know the real name for it but I'll find out since I know it's in the garage. Now you'll have me working on a new project - thank you!

Pirl you have so many Clematis's and they are all so beautiful, I don't have the kinda of space you do, but I enjoy looking at all your flower's. Please keep posting.

Dayton, OH

Does anyone have a picture of Clematis seeds when they are ripe enough to pick?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Roseycats. There may be a few more to post but it's dinner time here.

Beautiful blooms! How long does your clems bloom? I thought most cleam only bloomed a couple of weeks.

Dayton, OH

Thanks Pirl and Roses, enjoyed the picture's

Hagley Hybrid has been blooming for several weeks now along with The President (purple). These two have done better this year than any of the others.

This one is a bad shot of Reiman due to the mesh on the vegetable garden to keep the deer out - sorry. It is a beautiful clematis and I should move it elsewhere to allow it to show off.

This is supposedly Helsingborg but hasn't bloomed. Ignore the lavender/purple malva plants. I'm posting this just to show the amazing growth on this one planted the end of May, 2010. Should be gorgeous when it does bloom.

Candida Lanuginosa is being thrift with its blooms this year. No lush display as I'd have expected from the vine growth.

Since I am always looking for ways to remind myself of the no pruning clematises, I was happy to find these half Belgian blocks and may have to buy a few more. Then, hopefully, I will see the blocks before I cut when I shouldn't be cutting.

Ernest Markham is in bloom now but it's just too hot and humid to take his photo!

All of the new 2011 purchases have adapted well and put on lots of growth.

The clems are just lovely...what a great combo with Hagley & the President....I have those Belgian blocks around my wellhouse as edgers....they work great.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Marilyn.

The blocks were extras from a project completed last year.

Going to have Clematis seed soon

I love seeing the heads glowing in the sunshine. They are so unusual and so attractive.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

Pirl. Do you ever find that you want more clems but dont where to plant them? That is where I have a problem.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's a constant problem, Marie. I saw quite a few tonight and kept hitting the buy button but didn't go to the checkout, thankfully.

I do try walking around the gardens thinking where I could put more of them but haven't found enough good places. The longer I wait the more clem's seem to come on the market.

Centennial, CO(Zone 5a)

I have a 6 foot privacy fence all the way around my backyard & it's not full of clems *yet* but I sure am working on it - got 6 more this week!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wonderful. Which ones did you buy? We clem lovers need to know!!!

Athens, PA

Marie - I have the same problem and yes, I do continue to buy them - but I have found places for everyone. Try some of the integrefolias - they just love to sprawl through the garden and look wonderful when they intermingle with some of the other plants.

Anita - The different pruning groups of the clematis will start flowering in our zone around May and then continue on until Fall. Especially if you prune them back. I do have one in particular that flowers most of the summer. It is called Roguuchi.

I moved my Hagley Hybrid this past Spring and then put Gravyete (sp?) Beauty in with HH. I should get some type of an idea next summer. Can't wait to see the combo.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

I wouldl ove to see that combo, too. I mixed two clems around my lamp post. I forgot what the first one was so it will be interesting to see that combo. LoL

Thomaston, CT

Sounds like what I do! Cannot remember what is planted where......I thought I'd run out of room for clems, but then I planted 2 against the garden fence...they both seem to be doing well, so I may plant more once I get rid of the poison ivy.....

Hustisford, WI(Zone 5a)

My Barbara Harrington, the clem I thought kicked the dust last year, bloomed yesterday! I will try to post a photo this weekend.

Now, if it would only reach it's expected height, it wouldn't be hidden by the daisies it is growing behind.... :) ~Jan

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Very nice to know it's alive and well. I wonder why height can be an issue with a few clematises we've learned to expect to grow tall.

Here it's Pinky that likes to hide behind the hosta. Maybe next year it will actually use the trellis.

But Pinky looks so nice on that hosta Pirl!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Lea! It would be nicer if people walking by could see it.

Hustisford, WI(Zone 5a)

I totally agree Pirl! ~Jan

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I was just walking by and saw it LOL

Thomaston, CT

Very lovely combo!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Jan.

Oh, you're hilarious, Lea!

Thanks, Robin. Nice view from the top step of the porch

It's quite unlike this Jackmanii at the compost that has already been cut back hard in May. It just wants to take over the compost bins.

Pirl, start filming, new movie coming to theaters soon, THE CLEMATIS THAT DEVOURED THE COMPOST BIN. I'd say, that clem really likes compost. What's in that bin? BFG. I'm in awe!!!

Duchess of Albany blooming again today on a new stem. I ran around today fertilizing all the clematis, and giving them some Epsom Salt, and hand watered, even though we're supposed to get rain the next several days. I'm not counting on that. All the new clematis are finally putting on some growth, but I think I'm going to have to move Omoshiro, it's not making any growth, although still green and healthy. I don't think it's getting enough sun.

Here's DOA.

Pink Champagne has grown several feet and is developing several buds. Wish it looked like your Jackmanii.

What a beauty and what an immaculate garden! My DofA is also in bloom and since the deer left it alone I have more than one flower!

I think that Jackmanii just loves compost. If I get to cutting it back tomorrow I'll take photos so I can show how fast it grows.
